take with 1 on the bar

 :)

I have a little rule that says - 'one on the roof? quite possibly 2 after taking this double, doors closing? - most probably a pass.'

Sometimes I take in these situations - maybe they're behind a 5 point prime and not at the edge for example.
Often times my takes are errors according to GNU.

This one though is a strong take and I'm not sure why

I can see about 20 very strong numbers for my opponent and not many good returns (11 33 44 for example) if he is unlucky this turn.

thoughts?

Blitz positions are easy for the doubler, tough for the taker. I can imagine a lot of people passing this one; it's a tough call.
Some factors that might make you think it's a take.
White has five blots. that makes for a lot of flexibility but also a lot of work to do tidying up if Red can enter quickly.
White has already made her 2pt, so that priming variations are unlikely.
The race is very close if Red can enter quickly and if he can enter and hit something, he will lead.
Red does have a second vulnerable blot, but it isn't in a place where White will be that keen to attack.
Lastly, Red has a useful little block of his own that will be very useful if he can anchor and i think that with two checkers behind it, this is what gives him his take.
How to add all that up and make a rule to guide you in the future? It can't be done. A formula incorporating the race, shots, points made, builders, your horoscope and the stock exchange forecast for the next 24 hours is the Holy Grail of bg theorists, but as yet undiscovered. It's just a matter of feel really. Hint. Taking these teaches you something, passing teaches you nothing, because you don't get to play it. If I think it's close, as I would have done here (wrongly, it isn't), then I take blitzes. At this score though, if you take, be prepared to be aggressive with the recube. It's easy to lose your market at 5-away, 5-away.

Dorbel had some other useful thoughts on this kind of position on Fibs so I thought I'd add them here ...

dorbel says: I might have added that one on the bar against a four point board with another blot somewhere is almost always a pass!

dorbel says: You can pass them safely unless the attacker has four men still back.
