The main thing here is to minimize shots.  If we leave a blot on the three then he has 11 shots and if we leave it on the 4 he has 13.  Do we give him a 35% chance to hit us, or keep it to 30.5%?  The choice is easy.  The fact that 4/1 also puts a third checker on the roof is gravy.
