Fibsboard update

webrunner

Hello everybody,
Welcome to the new and improved Fibsboard.

I have converted the forum to a different forum software with more features and better security. This is the first update in a series of updates over the next year in which i will add functionality every time.

Articles
For now we have the new functionality to publisch articles and reviews. Anyone that has a serious article and would like to share it with the rest of the community, please feel free and submit it.

Gammon Empire
I recieved a request from one of our sponsors, Gammon Empire, if i could provide a support forum for his backgammon server. This is also a new part on Fibsboard. But don't worry, the main goal and community of Fibsboard will allways be FIBS related.

Rearranged and added forums
I rearranged some forums for better overview and added a forum for the new fibsclient DelFibs.

For now this is it. Feel free top post any bugs, typo's or other problems in this topic.
Have fun! :specool:

Nice work!  I have a question, though...it appears that a number of seemingly randomly selected posts have non-functioning scrollbars on the right. Why is that?  Just a bug?  Thanks!

Thanks for all your work, webrunner... the FIBS community appreciates you. :thumbsup2:

Actually i think that is a bug in the old forum where posts weren't saved in a correct manner. It will probably not happen in new posts. Also i haven't seen any of those using FireFox.

:-) , Thank you for your time Web ,

What is karma ?

Where are the pics of members?

I get some errors on member pages, under IE :Line 68, Char 0, Object expected.

The Karma system is a system with which members can express their positive or negative feelings on a post or member. You can give karma points if you have posted more then 25 posts and only one per member every week.

The member pictures didn't make it through the conversion but soon there will be a new option to add pictures.

Could you tell me on what page exactly you get that error?

Hmmmm, love the fact that it will be more secure - and hopefully a lot more spam free, but it will take me some time to get used to it - perhaps I should run off to join the Hamish..... :cripple:

Some posts seem to have not made it - meetings of fibsters for one - I had made a post about meeting kid_pantyhose, and intended to post the photos, sorry blurs, I took of him competing - are they due to follow?

Also photos are currently downloadable, but not displayed, will this change? And does that change the photoposting restrictions  (ie picture size).

I love the top bar which displays my status (or whatever you might call it) so I can get to new posts straight from there.

Thats all for now - I am sure I will find more..

All new photo's will be visible as a thumbnail in the post, clickable.

The number of posts that was in the board before the conversion was exactly the same after the conversion, so every post should be there. I did however rearranged the boards and moved some topics around. That could be the problem. Have you tried the search option?

It will be more secure, however spam is like virusses, they find new ways of getting in all the time. The best way to fight spam is good and active moderation on the forums. Also i added captcha registration.

The maximum attachment size is 2048 Kb

Is that a scotish tribe that eschews all technology?

Arghhhh, also cant find an edit feature - so when I write a post when I am half asleep  - then realise I meant Amish, and not their Scottish cousins, the Hamish, it is alllll toooo late

Ok - will give the search feature a go and if I find you will know - cos I will post some photos (but probably not tonight - I must go and deal with that half asleep issue - ooh and where is the ;) emoticon?)

I'm still tweaking the permissions. This forum has a much more sophisticated permissions system, but it needs some tweaking to get it right ;)

New discoveries...I tried searching for the post I made under kid_pantyhose and velodrome (which i figured was a pretty unique term) neither search found the post I am looking for (or any results at all in fact)  Any other ideas?

My messages shows I have 13 messages, but on clicking my inbox, it says it is empty.... :(

But hey - I can edit out my mistakes now  :thumbsup2:

Perhaps we need a new topic for questions specific to use of the new board?  ;)

Well, I'm using firefox and I'm seeing it now even in this new thread. :(

You need to have made 25 posts b4 you can give Karma. In a thread under a persons icon you will see two links [applaud]  and [smite].

Hi there, With time I feel like that FibsBoard is little more complicate than before.
The use of unread post and new replies seems not working properly sometimes.
I do not search but the button to post link is not as good as the old one (can't put text different from the link).
Very little things but the old board was very simple and enough for me, now I feel a little bit lost.
Anybody else ?
I wait a little to post my feelings but I can't see any real improvement, just some little drawbacks. And i wonder to know if it was only me

Or it is just this color which doesn't suit me  ;)
Tomawaky "I feel good da da da da da da da.........i knew that i would now........."

webrunner

It is possible to seperate link from tekst. Do it like this:

Fibsboard forum

which gives:
Fibsboard forum

A big improvement on the forum is the better security wich results in far less spam already. Also better image handling, better Personal message system, spellchecker, inline editing, keyboard shortcuts, indexed search, etc.. Also this forum software has a lot more potential and possibilities to expand functionality.

What is wrong with the colors?
Actually i got a lot of messages that people found the old lay-out outdated. I tried to make it a little easier on the eyes. B)

Last tip: look at the forum index page to look for the newest post. The Cubes turn read when there are inread posts or topics for you. Clicking the icon shows you the topics wich have new posts only.

I am glad you told me honestly what you think about the new version. I'll see if i can make things a little easier.

I don't think it is only you - we were all comfortable with the old board - familiarity learned over a long period of time. But I can remember when I first used that board and it was unfamiliar and frustrating, and little by little, I learned how it worked and how to use it to best effect.  It is the same with this one - it is taking time to find out how it does the things we were used to - and how to use the new things.

I don't know why some of the search options (new and unread posts) don't work for some browsers (anymore than I can explain why I couldn't see the kid pantyhose post for so long  ;))- but it all works in firefox - and firefox is free and superior to IE - get it and try using the board from there.

One of my personal hates about the old one was the lack of spell checking - I didn't mention it, because it would be a luxury - when it was set up here, well that made my day!! :)

Of the other things webrunner mentions - the reduction in spam is FANTASTIC!!!
I am playing around with the new functions (as I am sure you can see ;)) and learning them bit by bit, may I suggest you take it slow and have a play.

As for the colour - agreed   :puke: I never much cared for green  ;)

Oooh and one more thing I really love - in the old forum, and just about every other forum I have used, when you insert an emoticon - that is go back and try and insert one into text you have written - they always insert at the end and you have to cut and paste it back where you want it.  Highly frustrating in a long post - guess what? This one doesn't do that - you get the emoticon where you want it, straight away!!

One thing that would be good is the longer edit times I was used to on the old board - this one removes the edit option pretty quickly (I am not sure how long yet).

Thanks for the tip on creating links - I will try that next time I need to do one...

Using the quote option is one which also differs a bit from the old board - and isnt quite so intuitive, but it is simple when you get the hang of it.

I am surprised you got messages saying the old board looked outdated - I have used other free forums (BIBA for instance, and some dog owners forums) they are no where near the standard of the old fibsboard!! Not in look, functionality, navigation etc - they all look ropey and shoestring efforts  :) (even though they have the more modern spam protection - capcha do you call it?)

One last point - if you had used the wonderful new spellchecker you installed for us - it would have helped you correct 'inread' to 'unread' and 'wich' to 'which'  :giggle:

Tomawaky

Thanks Weby for the tips for the url - is it possbile to insert something link (url)http)text(/url in the button ?
And agree with you about security. It is necessary.

Thanks diane, I agree with you about smiley - 1 pt for the new version
I use Firefox since long and don't like IE
I have not use all the new feature here, but why not !
What about this one
And about spell checking, what I need is a convertor  :eager:  :frusty: :idea2: :s49: :tongue2:

About The Cubes which turn read. For exemple I look at the index "C4Fibs subject" but when I clic on "No unread topics found since your last visit"  :cry2:

But do not worry weby, I am only a little too nostalgic. See no will there to give all causes some. I just want to give my impression and share. Nothing else.

And I HATE GREEN

And your post showed me there is  :tongue2: - which I couldn't find before and wanted to use instead of the  :giggle:, but now someone else has posted - I cant edit that anymore.  I can see good reasons for that - but it is a bit annoying, guess I was spoiled before  :)

Yes - a poll is the way to go, if you can change the colour scheme - I thought it was a like it or lump it situation  :)

One more thing on searching / navigation, I am finding myself more and more missing the 'view recent posts' option. Many a time I read a post and then think of something I want to add sometime later - then re-finding the post is a bit pesky - especially if you cant remember what thread it was in. The old option to view posts over a definable time scale was an excellent short cut for that.

The karma thing is a clever idea and the lower limit of posts is an excellent criterion too. A guy that has significant low posts cannot judge expert people with a significant higher number of posts. Additionally, this idea motivates players to post at least the minimum number of posts to give them the right to vote (more people discuss in the board and this gives extra utility to the site). I am not sure which is the optimum lower bound but I am sure that we have to congrats Eric for this idea.  :applaus:

By the way Eric, is there any way for the user to see the fibsters who applaud him and the users who smite him?
