Most Fibsters know how close Anakin and I were.  I have been planning a trip to Australia to see him.
At 4am EST on Monday, I called his house in Spence, ACT, Australia to harass him because he had
not been on-line since September 8th.  It was 6pm on Monday in OZ.  His mother answered the phone
and, upon hearing my voice, told me Simon (his real name) had passed away the day before.  I also
spoke with his twin sister who lives in Sydney.  They both said some very kind things to me about how
much Simon both loved and hated playing those long session with me.

I am still going to OZ and will stop to meet his mother.  She said she would give me some pictures of
Simon and I will post them here.

When I first met Anakin, he was a 1095 player.  I berated him, insulted him, and mocked him.  With a
lot of help from jimbok, I was able to get Anakin to practice against GNU-bg.  It took a while, but he
became very good player.  The last time we played he got me to take a sucker double.  If you know me,
you know my strength is in doubling.  He was up 6-0 in a 7 point game and cursed like a drunken
sailor as I worked my way to 6-5.  But he won the last game and went into usual heavy lumber routine.

I really will miss him.

Anakin made me made me laugh at lot over the years, and sometimes he even made me think.  Sometimes he was frustrating, and he blamed it on the meds he was taking.  I can't recall how many years it's been that I've known him on FIBS, but we had many a good chat (and a few of the other kind too!).  When was that postcard tourney?  I lost to him and had to send him a postcard.  I know he was on FIBS a couple of years prior to that.

Anakin, i hardly knew you, but i've been blundering around all night thinking of you, old friends, and family who have passed on beyond the beyond .. i've also been hanging around fibsland all night while drinking a little Lone Star beer and smoking Indonesian Kreteks sort of drenched in melancholy .. as i've never met an Aussie that didn't imbibe, it seemed appropriate, mate .. while watching a few games tonight, i was reminded of the term we often use in backgammon "dancing on the bar" .. well, mate, you've danced right off the danged bar and you are missed by many including me

seeing the many shouts by your better friends and posts here has been quite nice .. that, another beer and some Bob Wills music will get me through 'til dawn .. in closing, i'm also reminded of old small town cemeteries all over Texas where an inscription on many family tombstones seems to fit nicely in this thread, too

Anakin - "Gone but not forgotten"

This is very sad news and will shake the community. It is always sad when we lose someone, but I know Anakin had made his presence well known on FIBs.  He could be a pain in the ass when losing, but I think that afflicts pretty much everyone at one time or another. He wound people up, but then apologised so graciously and had such charm that it would soon be forgotten, it was hard to stay mad for long.

He had learned so much and worked hard to improve his game - although I hadn't spotted that Carolina was coaching him - I thought they were just flirting 

He ran tournaments for all of FIBs to enjoy and his shouts were also good entertainment value, he will be missed.

It makes me very sad to hear that. I didnÃ,´t know about his disease until now.
For me it was always fun and pleasure to meet Anakin.

I had noticed Anakin from his exuberant shouts on FIBS and took a liking to him. I only played 1 or 2 short matches with him and truly regret not making more of an effort to get to know him better. The mental image I had of Anakin is as a favorite baby of the FIBS family that was friendly and liked by everyone. Upon hearing that he may have been suffering from an illness, and in spite of it managed to always present a cheerful and positive aura to our little community, I recognize now that his heart was even bigger than I had imagined. Farewell dear Anakin, and may God give strength to those who were close to you to carry on.

Even though, I was aware that you were poorly at times, you always appeared to have a smile on your face and your stories always cracked me up laughing. I use to love just popping in to watch some of your matches, specially the ones with Carolina Blue. The funny abuses he use to give to CB and the way CB would give it back to him, was just pure "comedy"!!

I enjoyed picking on Anakin, and I hope he had great fun putting up with my tiny torments. Thanks Carolina_Blue for your insight into the situation, and for passing the news along to all of us. FIBS is a better place for his time spent here, and hopefully, as I think sixty_something touched on, FIBS becomes a better place for his passing.

When a friend dies, it should give us pause to reflect on our own lives, and to consider how we treat the people around us. On FIBS and on the internet, where anonymity is usually the rule, we all need to remember that there are actual people on the other ends of our games and our chats and our E-mails, and that each of these people have their own stories to tell ââ,¬â€ most of them interesting ones. We should all strive to listen to the pieces of these stories and the characters who share them with us. I'm glad to have heard some of Simon's story, and I hope I added a few laughs to it.
