Another Two Time Winner

In a field of 24 players the favorites took control dominating across the board winning 16 of the 23 matches .. moyang (1733),  #3 seed, won a pitcher of Bloody Marys for the second time defeating #1 seed, don (1787), in the finals .. this is the first time two top seeds have met in the finals .. moyang and don also now become the only two players to win two "Sunday Specials"

RickrInSF Smokes the Field

#13 seed, RickrInSF (1616), defeated #3 seed, sixty_something (1792), 5-3 in the finals .. the win was RickrInSF's first in a "Sunday Special" and my third second-place finish .. the field of players was only 17 today with an average FIBS rating of 1652.9 one of the lowest since "Sunday Specials" began back in September as several regulars just missed the registration deadline

regardless, the win was just as sweet for RickrInSF (1616) who managed wins against two other surviving top seeds with wins against #6 seed, donzabackgame (1673), and #7 seed, socksey (1662), after a forfeit in his first match when resh_lakish failed to return from a traditional tourney starting "smoke break"

A "special" thanks to don for creating a nice supplement to RepBot that makes reporting these results much easier in the seeded order format i've adopted

in a large and strong field with five previous "Sunday Special" winners, r_monk wins his first Bloody Mary pitcher .. 27 players entered, four with 1800+ ratings (the second time that's happened) .. the average player rating of 1637.4 was the second highest since "Sunday Specials" began back in September .. while favorites won 15 of the 26 matches, the top seeds were all knocked out early again .. only number one seed Zorba (1906) survived to round 3 .. of the top ten seeds only r_monk and Zorba were not eliminated in their first or second match

sunray (1708), #8 seed, defeated #22 seed, zulu (1456), 8-3 in the finals .. zulu broke out to an early 3-0 lead, but threw a possibly risky cube when ahead in the fourth game .. sunray redoubled and eventually gammoned zulu for the win

in keeping with the Bloody Mary tradition of upsets, zulu defeated top seed dorbel 3-0 in round 3 .. sunray defeated RickrinSF in the semi-finals to assure a new winner in this weeks "Sunday Special"

He's Back!

First, as the founder of this fun and now long running little tourney, many apologies for unexpectedly leaving you all in the lurch. Back in March, a combination of things bumped me offline for about a month, but the phone bill was finally paid and the modem fixed. In the interim, I discovered other obsessions which I plunged into as enthusiastically as I did coming back to backgammon just two years ago - thanks to FIBS. In no time a week turned into a month which quickly turned into a nearly six month sabbatical. I apparently needed it. While I may not be as active in FIBSland as before, it has really been great fun reconnecting with you all in shouts and play at FIBS and now here. I have been warmly welcomed and roundly insulted numerous times. It feels just like coming home!

Second, but no less important, many thanks to the volunteer TD's who have stepped in to keep this tourney "Special" by hosting in my absence - most especially don, manxcat, Spielburg, adrian, PersianLord, and Kari_Grandi. Oh sorry, I failed to mention our favorite multiple personality truckergirl. Wildthing, and Anhinga. You've all hosted one or more tourneys as TD's in the last six months. While any tourney needs a good TD, good players are necessary for a tourney to thrive and grow on its own. There are too many frequent and new players to thank, but, if you're reading this, thanks are most likely due to you, too. Regardless, it appears Bloody Marys, Sundays, and backgammon are a good mix and fun for all. Since this tourney started in September of 2007, we've had nearly sixty tourneys!

Finally, before I left, I received Patti's approval to seek sponsors for some way cool prizes for this championship, like Bloody Mary ingredients and other goodies, but no promises yet as that little project fell deeply between the cracks and is just now being revisited. Suggestions, contributions, or volunteers to help solicit prizes are most welcomed. Like maybe a gift certificate for a favorite bar in New York, London, Paris, or Montgomery, Alabama; or even a gently used t-shirt from the Kerrville Folk Festival or a little plastic Jesus for the dashboard of your car. Be creative and think of or contribute something for winners and our dedicated staff of volunteers who have kept this little tourney alive and kickin'.

Bloody Mary "Sunday Special" Season Championship 2007-2008

With special thanks to don for compiling a preliminary list of previous winners, we are ready to announce eligible entries for our first Season Championship. The 32 eligible winners were to have been announced last May, but yours truly was MIA then - c'est la vie and say no more. The championship format will be single-elimination 5 point matches with a 7-point final in two 16 player brackets. The Championship match will be scheduled to be held in place of the weekly tourney on some Sunday morning to be announced. It may be followed by a regular weekly tourney or we may just miss a week if all the watchers had too many Bloody Marys. All matches in the 16 player brackets shall be scheduled by the players and can be played at any time within a 7-10 day window. We urge you to try getting your match finished in 3-5 days, but understand if you can't. A warning will be issued to both players if not completed within 7 days. The Championship TD, not yet appointed, will handle all protests and disputes, if any, and award the match after 10 days in typical FIBS fashion or by my unilateral decision as the self-appointed Bloody Mary tournament czar.

Registration to the Season Championship is open now by invitation only. Invitations with the TourneyBot tourney number for your randomly assigned bracket have been sent to each of you by FIBS messages to the nicks above. If you've qualified for both, remember to register in both brackets.

Championship play will commence on Haloween (seems appropriate) and run automatically thenceforth by TourneyBot. According to Tom, we will not likely have any problems or conflicts. TourneyBot will nag you each time you log in regarding your next opponent for the tourney. Should any eligible players not register, TourneyBot will simply assign a bye in that round.

The first bracket started on Halloween morning, as planned, but a temporary problem with TourneyBot delayed the start of the second bracket until Saturday morning. Additionally, TourneyBot has been down occasionally for maintenance. Any matches played but not reported below may not have been reported to TourneyBot and must be reported to me to be awarded properly.

Bloody Mary "Sunday Special" Season Champion
Season I

Congratulations to pck the winner of our first Bloody Mary Season Championship defeating yours truly, sixty_something, in a very close double-elimination finals. The finals went down to the last game of the last match with the cube at 4 and double match point. We played the match about two weeks ago in parallel with the regular Bloody Mary tourney. I won the first match 7-5. In the second match, pck took a 6-4 lead into the Crawford game which I won with a gammon. But pck won the post Crawford game winning the match, 7-6, when my ace point backgame fell apart with an untimely roll of 66. In the final match, pck, 2-away and leading 5-3, offered a good cube which I correctly accepted according to GNUbg and redoubled for match point, but pck went on to win the match and the title becoming our first Bloody Mary Season Champion.

The big prize for participants in our first season champion are Nacci points offered by donzeamon, czar of Nacciland and creator of FIBS-O-NACCI. The total points available, nearly 3,500 Naccis, are the equivalent to a weekly award of 100 Naccis to weekly winners over a 32+ week season with interest. The championship winner receives 1,000 Naccis and each registered entrant, already a winner of at least one weekly event, receives at least 30 Naccis.

Additionally, a special thanks to luya are also due for providing the graphic image above, designed and customized by a friend of hers, for our Bloody Mary Season Championship Cup. Your nick, pck, becomes the first to be virtually engraved on this really cool trophy.

Despite my best intentions at attempting to obtain other prizes for the tourney, time did not permit securing and confirming other prizes. Since the Season II Bloody Mary Championship is about to start, we will use the same format for prizes as in Season I. Maybe by Season III we can obtain corporate sponsorship(s) and other prize contributions to spice up the prize pool a little. For now, Naccis, a very nice virtual trophy, and bragging rights will have to suffice.

Thanks to all who played in our first Season Championship and who have played in the weekly Bloody Mary tournaments. Bloody Marys on Sundays have become a FIBS tradition thanks to all you players, old and new, who have kept it going with regular weekly attendance of 20 or more from all over the world. Hopefully, we'll see you in the Championship for Season II which is beginning soon or in a future championship. I will continue to work toward increasing the prize pool to add to the excitement and fun for future championships.
