The Forum doubled and roadkillbooks accepted, now we (blue) have a 4-2 to play:

This is a very good roll for us.  Let's be thankful that we didn't let Diane roll the dice.  (c:

The main problem with this roll is that there are several good ways to play it.  We can simply make a fourth point and get our backman moving with 24/20 6/4.

Or we can make a fourth point while safety-ing our lead blot with 8/4/ 6/4.

Both are good moves, but I think we need ot hit here because of the match score - let's go for gammon.

None of the loose hits do as much for us as the wne that hits and makes a fourth point.  So that's my choice -

6/2* 4/2.   Two men on the bar, a four point board, and the remaining open point leaves a very poor backgame for rkb if he manages to make a second point in our homeboard.

This is interesting. My vote to make the 4 point stands alone. I am willing to gamble that rkb dances here and then go after his blot on the 2 point if he does. We still have to get a lot of pieces around the board and I don't want to see him with a double blockade on the 4 and the 5 as we're coming around.

My take is that I'd rather face a blockade on the 4 & 5 than a backgame against the 2 and 5.   Of course, I'm teh suck at backgames so what do I know?  But regardless of which is a stronger second point for rkb, putting a second checker on the roof makes it harder to make that second point.   And even with my sucky backgame skills, I know that one point ain't enough to mount a backgame.

It looks like gnu disagrees with me, along with the rest of the forum. Eh, what does it know? :-) You guys (and ladies) are probably right to hit the 2nd piece, though I now reserve the right to say 'I told you so' later on.

Your rollout looks good there, ah_clem. You might get slightly better results overall if you truncate at an even number of plies, 10 or 12. Better yet, don't use truncation at all, but that takes some extra time. Below are my results from a 2-ply rollout, the best play didn't change, but the equities and their differences changed a bit as a result of higher settings.

Spoiler

Pointing on the 2pt is clearly better than just making the 4pt, it wins more games and especially more gammons. At the score, it's not so close anymore.
