better speed now hopefully..........i think i have solved one of the causes for slow posts/editing..........

there have been several server overloads lately - we are maybe using a database on a shared server used by a porn site!

-- when i do do the big migration/upgrade -- i may change the mysql server we use --- i use about 10 across all sites...but it's difficult to compare as my other sites are much smaller in terms of database sizes -

to give you an idea how bloated the board has become-- some new installations i have completed this week are 60x smaller, but remember there is stuff here from a period of 7 years!

some more info on this is in the vic conversation here

i have done a lot of pruning/ testing lately, and so hopefully we now have a faster beast, there is very little more that can be done at the moment unfortunately and the hosting company are pretty good at fixing faults and getting us back working.

i am also hopeful that a fresh installation of a new version of our software may give us the chance to have a leaner setup too -- as not all the features we enjoy at present are available to work in the new setup -- there are however compensations.

the new portal software, for example, i am testing on the new sites, seems good -- but there are still quirks and bugs -- which i can live with in lesser sites -- but are not liveable with fibsboard.

i like that we can post pics/diagrams within posts, but there is no doubt that maybe this new gallery may allow for a more efficient use of our server takeup, but we must take care - as the bigger the files that are 'called', the more server is tested.

simple text boards that i run for various other groups tend to be much quicker......

ps here is a quick snip of the style i have been look ing at -- think olive green to grey fade

that all sounds good - but that example looks a bit, well, businesslike for this forum - which is more 'fun' really.  is there something more cheery?

obviously ! - the sites i have been working on this week are for serious subject sites, but i have used the opportunity to find a combination of styles that might suit the future fibsboard

it is the basic layout/font /look for a template - i have been searching for - which will also accommodate the various 'blocks' of interest.

there would be the random pic for example, and  perhaps a version of our top banner as above...........
we can also adjust the front page look to have a non forum look - but my main concern is the forum itself with topics and boards remaining clear and readable.........the new software version of this board has a clean but somewhast 'faint' look and this particular style has a sharper resolution............

ps i am putting up all these posts and attachments as a way of testing loading speeds --- which seem much better; but we must see if it remains quick at busy times -- fingers crossed i think we have got it faster :)

thx adrian :)

i have just restarted firefox and i think that helps from time to time --- especially as it has probably been in use for nearly 5 days as i have been computing for too long this week -- must go to the alehouse and watch liverpool united!!

That whole look has the ughs!     Can you use pale green in place of the gray?

pale/olive green fading-----that is exactly what i was thinking (and indeed posted to that effect elsewhere here on more than 2 occassions :)

remember that whatever is produced will not be to everyone's taste and is usually a working starting point from which to evolve and is the big reason y i am not rushing into this -- remember also that you are seeing a small compressed pic of what is essentially a site whose layout i think might suit --

will put up more as it progresses but it will take 6 months or so...........

I really really wonder if Mac or Linux users have to restart their software or machines in less than 5 days ? Do they have to restart them once a week/decade/month/trimester/semester, every christmas ??? Anyone?

I hardly ever restart the mac - or shut down the browser or javafibs.  It goes to sleep when I am not using it, and wakes up when I ask.  It can be 'on', with the software open for months at a time.

The only time it ever gets restarted is when the mobile broadband dongle crashes it

whichever OS - if you run many programmes as i do --- it really helps to turn em off and let the automated management systems sort themselves out - especially with graphic progs where much hard drive space is used for cache ---layers and such.

mine is an elderly mac mini power pc and it will happily trundle on left to sleep overnite, and with lite duties can continue like that for weeks, but reality powercuts and cats often intervene!

i must say that i am very impressed with os leopard (i have only upgraded to snow leopard on a laptop)
since mrs stog binned her PC - the amount of maintenance i have to do is much reduced.

my problem is space -- i am always full -- the os hard drive needs at least 3 gig free space in my opinion and i am always on the cusp -- we have introduced a time capsule (wireless backup) which i really recommend - and mrs stog allows me to to do development work on her newer beast -- when she is out.

check out this desktop snap i took a while ago! (i'll put a bigger version in the Gallery when i get the chance)

this is one of the problems i have backing up sites such as fibsboard, for although the database may only be 12 mb -- the main files attachments and pics is huge and keeps growing - i have put your kind donations into yet another external hard drive (it is like NASA here!

Yup, that is one cluttered desktop  ;)
