Naavanaxx has introduced his ideas for an annual championship based on work he did in compiling a list of winners for 2010 .. it is an impressive amount of work and an interesting idea .. Naav and i have discussed it at length in chats at FIBS and in emails

like others, i have misgivings about basing the award or rankings on wins alone .. as Naavanaxx mentioned, there are other options .. i have come up with a first step based on a proportional distribution of points awarded each registered player .. a full 32 player bracket is worth 32 points to the winner; 27 players - 27 points to the winner; 9 players - 9 points to the winner; 3 players - 3 points .. other positions are awarded as follows:

for less than 32 players, points are awarded proportionately based on n/32, where n is the number of registered players from 3-31 .. decimals above are used for calculation purposes only .. all points are awarded after rounding to whole numbers .. the decimal values are based on the points distribution used by the Official World Golf Ranking system consolidated for a 32 player bracket

the principle is simply that for determining FIBS Tournament Player Rankings the number of players registered in a tournament is directly proportional to the ranking points awarded or the value of a win .. thus, winning a tournament with 27 registered players is 3X as valuable as winning one with only 9 registered players .. for open tourneys where anyone can register, this appears to be a good way to differentiate the value in assessing a win

there are other considerations such as player ratings and length of tourneys, but we can deal with those later .. for now, a way to settle the debate over the value of a tournament win appears to be doable .. what do you think?

last week, i began collecting results from all our regularly scheduled tournaments .. i will post those results as soon as i can determine how best to do that .. if you're interested in those details, i have attached an Excel spreadsheet which contains a more detailed analysis of the distribution and the results of weekly tournaments through today's Bago .. for this week, beginning on Monday, the points race is familiar:

Player of the Week
Mon, 29-Nov, thru BagOlympic - Thursday

only a few days into this detailed demonstration of a new tournament player ranking system, it couldn't get any closer or more interesting, IMHO .. undaunted by socksey's three wins this week, the intrepid challenger, vegas_vic, won today's BagOlympic which propels him into a solid second place only two (2) points behind socksey

of course with vic nothing is as it seems .. in an apparent anomaly or bug in Challonge, the score which was reported correctly according to the brackets below with vic winning, 6-3, turns up in the listing of the "Full Results" with LuckyDice being the "Supreme Champion"

LuckyDice timed out without a final "official" ruling today, but since this is too good an example to overlook, i am giving the match to vic, for now .. since this is very experimental and certainly unofficial, i trust no one will object .. i'll change it later, if necessary

for now, you can clearly see from the Top 10 list that vegas_vic has only two wins compared to three for socks .. if we were counting only wins in evaluating tourney players, socksey would have a commanding lead over the field this week with 3 wins compared to zero for most of the remaining 44 registered players this week .. she would also have a solid lead over vic at 3-2 .. however, using this system weighted by number of registered players in each tourney, socksey pulled ahead with a slim 2 point margin by virtue of her tie for 9th place today

with the F3, Mini's, A9, and Bloody Mary tournaments coming up, each capable of generating 15-25+ players or points, the outcome of the Player of the Week race is far from certain .. at first glance, since socksey, vegas_vic, and yoyo are all near the top, it may appear that these results are not much different than the rankings derived from Naavanaxx's excellent effort at tabulating wins for 2010 .. to a certain extent that is true .. however, the finer level of detail available for all participating tournament players whether they have won or not is the inherent value in this approach

i've also added a pair of new TOTALS which i doubt any of us have ever thought much about before .. for example, Entries and Players -- Entries is the total of all registered players in the 7 tournaments listed, Players is the count of "unique" players represented in those entries .. Points is the number of ranking points distributed in all tourneys, Pts per Event is simply the average points per event .. all of these will become interesting barometers of tournament participation as time passes

like i said, i couldn't have planned a better example of why a system like this has merit .. as you become more familiar with what i am attempting to do here, please don't hesitate to ask questions or post comments within this thread .. just try to keep them on the topic of how this system awards points .. remember, the topic of seeding has been moved to another thread .. as you can see, it would become very confusing to attempt to sustain that conversation within all the new information i will be publishing in this thread .. the seeding topic will be dealt with completely at Seeding by Rating: fair or unfair?

Player of the Week
Mon, 29-Nov, thru F3

It was an all Euro final today with zbilbo facing off with LuckyDice. With zbilbo unabashedly fueled by beer and chocolate covered Christmas Marzipan, called "gloegg" in Norway, and LuckyDice kibitzing about almond cookies and hot spiced red wine, we Americans playing at lunch time or late morning didn't stand a chance.

With the win, worth 22 points for the 22 registered players, zbilbo jumped past LuckyDice, perennial finalist recently, into 3rd place in the player of the week standings.

I've expanded the standings below to the top 25 now that the weekend is approaching. With a win in a big tourney this weekend and a high finish in another almost anyone in the list could easily jump into contention. However, the obvious is now becoming, well, obvious. It appears the best way to the top of the list is the number of tourneys played. When all my data collection, tabulations, calculations, sorts, formatting, and lists are rendered silly in the face of the obvious, I am always grateful that I have a good sense of humor as well as enjoy crunching numbers.

Here is the weekend schedule. Hope to see you at one or all of the tourneys.

Cumulative Totals

the Player of the Week totals have been interesting, for me anyway .. as a result of a suggestion by jackdaddy, i began looking at cumulative totals from week to week .. jack suggested that coming up with a points per tournament number might be interesting to see and perhaps use for evaluating tournament players .. here is a first glimpse into that process

BTW, this process is becoming burdensome fast .. while Excel is great for many things, this project is beginning to push some limits .. i am not sure whether they are my limits or the limits of Excel, but i know that this database will grow rapidly as time goes by .. for me, size matters when dealing with data sets in Excel .. i think a database app like MySql may be more appropriate for gathering and extracting tournament data .. but i'd rather continue on the clumsy path with Excel for a while to see if there is anything of value to be gained by this little exercise or not

:help: so, any database folks out there like to lend a hand with this project and build a front-end for me?

meanwhile, here is an early look at cumulative points list for the 12 days since i began these tabulations

Player of the Week
Mon, 29-Nov, thru Mini Matches

The FIBS tourney dominatrix was out again today as socksey won her fourth (4th) tourney of the week in 7 tourneys entered. That's an impressive record in any league for any sport or game. Well done, socks.

With the win, worth 11 points for the 11 registered players, socksey has almost locked up Player of the Week honors and put herself on the leader board in Average Points per Tourney. Almost anyone could easily jump into contention for second place with a win in one of the two remaining tourneys this weekend. Second place receives either a kiss or a spanking from the dominatrix. Being a dominatrix has certain irrefutable rights and privileges. If socks were to pull off another win this weekend, she could set a record that might stand for some time.

Hope to see you at one or all of the remaining tourneys.

Player of the Week
Mon, 29-Nov, thru After Nine #5

The three top players this week were out in force again for the A9. vegas_vic made the finals, but picked up the win; socksey was knocked out in the semi-finals and LuckyDice picked up points tied for 5th. So, socksey remains in a domineering lead for the week, fitting for the FIBS tourney dominatrix, but vic gained a little ground on her and solidified his hold on second place for the week.

The Average Points per Tourney board below looks like it will become a good indicator of player strength in tourneys. I will limit it to players who compete in a minimum number of tourneys per week. I am thinking at least 2-4 per week would be a good threshhold.

Player of the Week -- Final Standings
Mon, 29-Nov, thru Bloody Mary "Sunday Special"

Entering play today 15 points separated socksey in first place with 62 points and vegas_vic with 47 points in the Player of the Week points race. LuckyDice and zbilbo held third place with 31 points, but were too far back to contend for first place.

Indeed, only one unique combination of events could propel vegas_vic into first place. First, socksey would have to lose in round 1 or not play at all -- the latter was unlikely to happen. Second, vic must win -- any lesser finish would not earn sufficient points. Third, the win needed to be worth at least 16 or 17 points more than socksey score for the day -- so, registration also entered into the equation for a vegas_vic victory.

In what proved to be a perfect finsh, vegas_vic scored the win in a field of 25 players and socksey was knocked out in round 1 by gaspar. With a nice touch of irony, vic faced and defeated gaspar in the Bloody Mary finals resulting in the following final score in the Player of the Week race:

So, with one dramatic finish, vegas_vic eclipised what appeared to be a record setting week for socksey, formerly know as our FIBS dominatrix. Congrats on a most exciting finish, vic.

Seeding by Reverse Rating
Most readers are familiar with the controversy of seeding by rating being tagged as "unfair". In order to address, not necessarily settle, that debate, the seeding order for the Bloody Mary may be Reverse Rating for weeks 9-16 for this season or some other adaptation. In reverse rating seed order first round byes will be automatically assigned by TourneyBot to the lowest seeds by rating. In order to better illustrate what happens with such seeding, I took the time to recreate today's tournament in Challonge. Each player is shown with his or her FIBS rating. The grey numbers to the left of the player name is the seed order. Take a look at the bracket for a better understanding.

The Average Points per Tourney cumulative table remains a good indicator of player strength in tourneys over the last two weeks. this category is limited to players who compete in a minimum number of tourneys per week, currently 2 per week or a total of 4 tourneys. I am still thinking at least 2-4 per week will be a good threshhold.

Recap

after what has proved to be an exhausting outburst of number crunching, munching, and massaging by me, i am taking a few days off to put a little perspective on my own thoughts and commnets on whether this little exercise has been worthwhile and worth continuing

i like diane's comments .. provided with rankings in several forms, i think each of us may enjoy seeing our names in print on such lists occasionally .. i know i do .. i also look for other ways to interpret the details, like wordman making the Top 25 list with only one win in only one tournament entered .. it is a pity his win was in the Tuesday Bago with a remarkably low and unrepresentative registration of only 7 and not in Sunday's Bloody Mary with 25 players .. a single win worth 25 points would have put anyone in 6th place, only a point away from the Top 5

i particularly like to think "something like this" might be a motivator for FIBSters to play in tournaments of all kinds .. i am excited about diane and others creating a prime time tourney for Aussies, perhaps even a series of such tourneys .. i am excited to learn that Tom and others like the idea of a series of nighttime tourneys in the states, dubbed the City Lights Tour .. i especially like the metrics that give us a handle on how many players are actually participating in tourneys .. all of that have been unintended consequences of this little adventure

i could go on ad nauseum, but i'd rather reflect on the pros, cons, and future of "something like this" and summarize that later .. i will continue to tabulate data for this week and publish it sometime before the weekend .. i will not do detailed tourney by tourney reporting again anytime soon .. even with the help of Excel to pre-format the tables for publication here, that whole process is just way too clumsy and time intensive -- not to mention perhaps just a little too much information

Naavanaxx and others have suggested ways i can improve the Excel spreadsheet (most recent atached) to simplify this whole process .. Tom has suggested that he can train TourneyBot to do a lot of the calculations and ordering to vastly improve our ability to crunch the numbers and tally the information .. indeed our long term goal is to teach TourneyBot or a new StatsBot to not only crunch the numbers but fully automate the process of making tournament results and "something like this" instantaneous at FIBSboard, but that's on a back burner of an already large stove top

meanwhile, i'd especially like to hear from others in this thread what your thoughts are, good and bad, about "something like this" whatever that may be

i'll check in later in the week with a more detailed and less rambling recap .. i'll resume posts with tournament stats later still .. i need a vacation from number crunching .. when fun begins to feel like work, it is time to consider finding a real job .. i'd rather keep it fun

Getting Current With a Little Help From Our Friends

Six weeks have passed since my last FIBSboard post after introducing the analysis and reporting of FIBS Tournament Player Ranking (TPR). Weeks one and two, (22-Nov to 5-Dec), have been reported exhaustively in previous posts. Now, data for 8 full weeks of tournament play has been collected and converted using the TPR ranking system described in detail in this thread.

Initial feedback has been generally good, but the amount of time required to stay current and continue these posts was far more than I was willing to commit -- my use of the word exhaustively above was quite correct. However, just as I was ready to strike my tent and move on the the next thing, volunteers arrived willing to share major pieces of the work and design load.

First to volunteer was aviator, the backgammon king of Knight's Ferry, California, and a really nice guy. Another volunteer, lewscannon, a New York City backgammon ace and Excel expert recommended by vegas_vic, was recruited by me to improve the TPR spreadsheet design. Both performed yeoman's work in improving the design of my initial worksheets and aviator has labored above and beyond the call of duty in getting us current. Without those two guys recent involvement, this thread would have been history.

Maintaining the TPR had become much too much work for me to continue alone. With aviator now handling ALL data collection and conversion, and a significantly improved design thanks to lewscannon we are NOW CURRENT with weekly TPR results for the past eight tournament weeks and well on our way to developing a workable and manageable process for staying current. With that support, I am able to continue to improve the design and plan for future needs, such as simplifying posting of weekly standings.

You can see the results of our joint efforts by opening the attached Excel spreadsheet. Note that these are working spreadsheets, not intended for pretty reporting or ease of navigating. They are very much a work in progress. Comments by me (rb) and aviator (Michael) are sprinkled throughout. Areas of the worksheets are highlighted where we focused our attention in a few telephone sessions, but in no way are the spreadsheets well documented or designed for ease of use. Regardless, the collaborative effort has resulted in each of us learning new ways to use Excel which, for me, has always been more than half the fun.

Posts here at FIBSboard summarizing each week will be coming soon making TPR Standings more easily viewed. Within a few more weeks we will be posting weekly standings by the end of the current tournament week. We are now in tournament week nine (9).

For the purpose of TPR Standings, a tournament week is defined as Monday through Sunday. Tournaments included are regularly scheduled tourneys at FIBS whether run using TourneyBot or Challonge. Currently, the tourneys included are only those listed in the Tourneys schedule here at FIBSboard. Others will be added as new regularly scheduled weekly tourneys come along.

Summary posts of TPR standings and status will be forthcoming. Designing a meaningful format for these FIBSBoard posts is a challenge of its own. Until the post format is settled and fully implemented, you may rely on regular attachments of the work file as we continue to develop it. Ultimately, our goal is to make all our reporting requirements obsolete and turn both the data collection, conversion, and reporting requirements over to TourneyBot. We are actually closer to that goal than you might imagine, but we are still a few months away. In the meantime, your feedback here or elsewhere is always welcome

Thanks again to aviator, lewscannon, and to all who have provided feedback and encouragement in developing this system. While aviator and I have been the only ones really seeing the TPR race unfolding over the past few weeks, I think you will find it an interesting new feature in FIBSland. Tournament participation seems to already be growing as a result of the increased awareness of tournament play which is inherent in the TPR scoring. If all goes according to plan, a doubling of both the number of tourneys and more importantly in tournament participation may not be too far away.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK -- TOP 25
FIBS TPR Week 3 --Monday (6-Dec) thru Sunday (12-Dec-10 )

While it appears the points race this week was close, vic actually ran away with it with three wins. But his first win of the week in the Monday Three/Five was under his vegasvic nick the other two as vegas_vic. While we all know that a vic by any name is still vic, the TPR calculations see two nicks as two different players. I've tried accomodating multiple nicks in Bloody Mary playoffs before. It was just too hard to do. It would be harder still with TPR calculations. So, if you find yourself caring about your TPR standing, be careful to use the same nick for tournament play.

OK, if you are reading this and think a TPR race might be interesting, give me some feedback on the types of reports you like, don't like, or ideas you'd like to see .. anything is possible at the moment .. we'll take the best and trash the rest .. thanks

meanwhile back at his ranch in Knight's Ferry, aviator has been maintaining weekly records for ALL regularly scheduled FIBS tourneys .. we've been in more or less continuous contact since my last post, but with aviator and his wife taking a little time off for Mardi Gras in New Orleans and me lost in a baseball and home renovation haze, i've had little time to make posts to bring us current .. while i am still lost in the same haze and hope to be traveling soon, i will begin providing weekly TPR results soon, a job i have neglected in favor of baseball, renovations, and redheads, not necessarily in that order

Week 4, 13-Dec to 19-Dec, will be my next post .. my goal is to post weeks 4 through 11 within the next week or two .. Week 11 will bring us only through the first week of February .. the current "tournament week" which ends on Sunday is week number 19 since we started tabulating weekly data and Week 13 of 2011

i'd apologize for being tardy, but since no one has been exactly overly enthusiastic, i don't feel too bad except for having ignored all of aviator's hard work in keeping this little project alive and current .. perhaps with a burst of weekly data, the rest of you can see why aviator and i think this idea still has merit and entertainment value to deserve a second look

for all of us who are regular tournament players at FIBS and FIBSboard readers, feel free to encourage us along, ask questions, provide us new ideas, and correct the errors that we will surely make from time to time

hope you enjoy the numbers and interesting FIBS tournament factoids you'll soon be seeing

TPR Preseason Preview

OK, I realize that this is all anticlimactic since it is rather dated, but in an attempt to give this whole Tournament Player Ranking (TPR) process a fair look, I will continue to post results for each week. We also have a commitment from aviator to continue to collect weekly tournament data. Within a week of two, I think we may be able to both get current. Once current we will all have a better understanding of what we have here.

I spent most of today working on cumulative totals using an initial design lewscannon provided about two months ago. The process was difficult (for me) to get going, but is now working well. However, it only provides cumulative totals by player for ONLY one field, Points. While useful, I'd like to see other cumulative totals by player, such as:

  • Wins
  • Tourneys entered

With that, the average points per tourney entered, which jackdaddy suggested may be a better monitor of player tournament performance could be calculated. There is an earlier post where I presented that for part of the first two weeks of this preseason. However, the ability to carry that forward now is lost. Regardless, the results were interesting. Click on the hyperlink to see what I mean.

With our current design (as I understand it) in order to capture those two additional cumulative totals (and any others) requires plain old brute force, but I think there may be a better way. Brute force means a new cumulative total sheet for EACH new field. However, such an approach directly increases the work required on a weekly basis as well as the chance of errors. Errors in complex spreadsheets can be very deceptive and difficult to detect especially across several sheets.

So, the cumulative results of this "Preseason" that I will post soon are limited to Points per Player, but as good a place as any to start. I'll get back together with lewscannon to see whether some solution other than brute force may be more appropriate for capturing other totals.

I have several other things on my wish list besides cumulative totals for players, but I am going to focus on getting the weekly data for 2011 current before chasing those objectives. I remain convinced that using Excel for this project is pushing the limits of my spreadsheet abilities. Yet I am eager to prove myself wrong.

Regardless, I am even more convinced that weekly summaries of tournament activity is good for us as tournament players and good for FIBS in general. Therefore, I will return to that task ASAP. Meanwhile, pardon my venting and enjoy the stats.

FIBS TPR PRESEASON CUMULATIVE TOTALS
29-Nov to 02-Jan-2011

It's Final Four weekend, ironically in Houston this year. While I am not a basketball fan at all, the annual 64 team brackets (expanded to 68 this year) of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament fascinate anyone and everyone regardless of their interest in basketball. The whole affair has become an annual rite of spring in the USA where bracketology becomes more than just an obscure word. In fact, a recent article in USA Today goes even further citing a DePaul University math professor, Jeffrey Bergen, who "calculates this already is the fourth-most-volatile tournament since the NCAA began assigning seeds in 1979."

For me, this is a signal that bracketology itself has matured to a new level. Bracketed tournaments are just plain fun to watch. As we know, they are even more fun to participate in.

So, in a tribute to NCAA basketball inspired bracketology, consider this set of totals a list of players that would be eligible for some end of season tourney at FIBS to determine a mythical FIBS Tournament Players World Championship. The list below would be their seed order. Maybe if we can make this TPR thing work, we can have ourselves such a tourney at the end of the 2011 tournament year.

There are all sorts of reasons why "Points per player" alone are not the best measure of anything. Perhaps the list is meaningless and artificial, but just look carefully at the list of names. This is the core group of our most active FIBS tournament players. Tournament players are some of our more active and involved FIBSters. For that reason alone, this is a meaningful and very real list.

During the last six tournament weeks of 2010, 152 unique players participated in the regularly scheduled FIBS tournaments used to produce these totals. With 10-11 tournaments a week, some players particpated in 6-8 tourneys a week. Their totals are naturally among the highest. Some very good players and active FIBSters particpated in only one or two tournaments during the six week period; some not at all.

It is my theory that we all like to see our names in a list. It is my hope that by providing lists and rankings such as this and more FIBS tournament participation will increase. I also believe that in general tournament participation encourages good sportsmanship and good FIBS citizenship. Hopefully, as 2011 unfolds, we will see a marked improvement in both with metrics to support increased participation. I'll leave metrics on sportsmanship and citizenship to RepBotNG or whatever comes next.

Coming soon in another thread will be weekly results for the "Tournament Year" 2011 (52 full "Tournament Weeks") beginning on Monday, 3-Jan-2011. Additional cumulative totals and averages will also be forthcoming once we get current.
