Welcome to the FIBS Tournament Player Rankings for 2011. As you know from a previous thread, aviator and I are continuing to compile tournament results on a weekly basis. Data collection, aviator's job, is almost current. I will be working toward bringing the posting of results current soon, hopefully within a week.

Your comments, questons, and suggestions are always welcome. New ways of looking at the information we are gathering will be forthcoming once we are current. For now, this will be the standard weekly report for the first three months of 2011. We hope you'll enjoy seeing these results and continue to join us in tournaments at FIBS. The Tourney schedule is always available on the leftmost column of the front page. It is these regularly scheduled tourneys on which all these stats are based.

There are two Monday Three/Fives because TourneyBot prematurely started the first. Since play had begun, I allowed it to finish, but we also started another. I commented then that both would count toward the TPR race. Thus, both are listed. Only regularly scheduled tourneys are used to tabulate TPR points.

FIBS TPR 2011 Week 2

The Saturday Stubbies, diane's new Saturday afternoon Australian based tourney is added this week to the TPR tourney list. The tourney is all two point matches. Registration and play begins at 0500/0530 UTC (16:00 AEST). If you're up late on Friday night, the tourney starts at 0100/0130 AM EDT.

Another new Australian based tourney, also hosted by diane, makes an appearance on the TPR list this week, the Sunday Session with three point matches and five point finals. Registration begins at 8 PM AEST with play beginning 30 minutes later. For the rest of us this is an early Sunday morning tourney at 0900/0930 UTC (0500/0530 AM EDT).

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Here is an early look at the Player of the Month category. This list is by total points only which is not necessarily the way we will determine the award. Total points highly favors the player who plays in the most tourneys during the month. While it is a good thing to acknowledge and award players who play in the most tourneys, it is not the only way to look at who was the best player that month.

For example, there were over 40 tourneys in the four weeks included in the list below. A player could play in 30 or more tournies and amass a point total that would place them near the top of the total points list, perhaps without winning a single tourney. Another player might play in only three tourneys a week, but win five or six tourneys, maybe the most wins by any player during the month. While the wins would propel them toward the top of the list, they might not have the highest point total. So, there are other ways to look at this which will be included once we get the weekly data current and have time to compile other totals.

Meanwhile, for our first look at Player of the Month, congrats to pollemanden, rif_raf, socksey, and aviator :thumbsup2: for making the top of the list. All have 100 points or more and are well ahead of the pack. Way to go!

There are all sorts of reasons why "Points per player" alone are not the best measure of anything. Perhaps the list is meaningless and artificial, but just look carefully at the list of names. This remains the core group of our most active FIBS tournament players. Since tournament players are some of our more active and involved FIBSters, this is a meaningful and very real list.

During the first 4 tournament weeks of 2010, 143 FIBS players (unique nicknames) participated in the regularly scheduled FIBS tournaments used to produce these totals. With 10-11 tournaments a week, some players particpated in 6-8 tourneys a week. Their totals are naturally among the highest. Some very good players and active FIBSters particpated in only one or two tournaments during the six week period; some not at all.

IF my theory that we all like to see our names in a list is correct, it is my hope that FIBS tournament participation will increase. I also believe that in general tournament participation encourages good sportsmanship and good FIBS citizenship. Hopefully, as 2011 unfolds, we will see a marked improvement in both with new totals to support increased tournament participation.

TPR Excel Spreadsheet

Attached is the Excel spreadsheet on which the most recent post is based. It is offered for anyone to browse through who may be curious about how we are doing this in Excel. It is not for the faint of heart as it is not very well documented or intended to be particularly user friendly. However, we have added sufficient comments in many cells to provide a useful background to what we do and why.

Again, this is in no way intended as an example of how to best accomplish the task at hand. I began tinkering with the concept months ago in conversations with Navanaax. It grew from there. I was about to put it away when aviator expressed an interest in seeing it continued. Then lewscannon provided some helpful insights into spreadsheet design that made collecting weekly and cumulative totals a lot easier.

I welcome anyone to comment on the design and offer suggestions for improvements. Other opportunities for volunteering are also available. While aviator and i are committed to continuing this for the year just to see what develops, we could always use backups and/or replacements. So, if you enjoy putzing around with Excel spreadsheets, we might be able to provide you with some fun.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

With all caveats fully in place regarding total points as just one of perhaps several ways to determine Player of the Month, here are the totals for the "tournament month" of February. Since a "tournament week" (hereafter week) is defined as tournaments from Monday through Sunday, a "tournament month" will not be the same as a calendar month. Within a "tournament year" there will be 52 weeks. Four "tournament months" will consist of 5 weeks. All others will be 4 weeks in length.

In addition, a first look at Year to Date (YTD) totals for January and February will list the top 64 tournament players by total TPR points.

Congrats to Damma, vegas_vic, and Anhinga for an excellent month in February. Hope you enjoy finding your name in the YTD Totals.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Here are the totals for the "tournament month" of March. Remember, a "tournament week" (hereafter week) is defined as tournaments from Monday through Sunday, a "tournament month" will not be the same as a calendar month. Within a "tournament year" there will be 52 weeks. Four "tournament months" will consist of 5 weeks. All others will be 4 weeks in length. March, a month with 5 weeks, creates a 13 week "tournament quarter".

Year to Date (YTD) totals for the first quarter list the top 64 tournament players by total TPR points.

Congrats to Anhinga, yoyo, and aviator for an excellent month in March. Hope you are enjoying these listings and finding your name in the YTD Totals. If you don't see your name below, join us for a regularly scheduled tourney at FIBS. Winning will get you more points, but just playing adds points to your YTD total.

Congrats to pollemanden for a dominating lead of nearly 60 points in YTD totals. There is a tight cluster of players dueling it out for second in a three way tie with aviator, socksey, and vegas_vic and Anhinga and yoyo closing fast.

Wooo hooo, we're current! Thanks, aviator, for a great job at data collection. Collecting data weekly, entering it into the spreadsheet, and checking it takes about two to three hours per week. Verifying data, maintaining cumulative totals, and posting here at FIBSboard (my job), takes about an hour a week. Spreadsheet design, maintenance, and development requires additional time which varies from a few minutes to a few hours a week. Now that we are current, we can begin focusing on ways to improve what we do as well as add new reports and data analysis.

FIBS TPR 2011 Week 15

We've added another new tourney to the TPR this week, Tanika's South African based Saturday Night Fever. This is our lucky 13th tourney up from 10 in January. A few years ago, there were only 4 weekly tourneys at FIBS -- two Bagos, the F3, and Mini's. We've come a long way and more new tourneys are being announced and planned. We will continue to add new regularly scheduled tourneys as quickly as we can. Tom is providing additional support with TourneyBot giving us tourney results formatted for easier data entry which is still a labor intense process, as aviator will readily confirm.

Tanika's new tourney is a unique fun format, double elimination with all one point matches and 5 point finals. Double elimination tourneys provide an interesting variation for players. Traditionally, many FIBSters have considered them too long for live play on-line. Tanika's new format, inspired she says by LuckyDice, resolves that issue with quick one point matches followed by up to two five point matches in the finals. Give it a try next Saturday.

FIBS TPR 2011 Week 16

Tom has provided a new way for us to retrieve data from TourneyBot which is minimizing the amount of work we are doing each week in data entry. WTG, Tom. Meanwhile, aviator is enjoying a weekend off and I am enjoying tinkering with the spreadsheets and adding a few new features. First, in the weekly tournament list, I am now including the winner and runner-up of each tourney. New goodies will be coming soon, but i wanted to see how this one looks now.
