FIBS TPR 2011 Week 17
25-Apr through  01-May-2011

Another down under tourney is added to the TPR list this week, the Krazy Kiwi Klassic!. This makes our 14th TPR tourney giving us two a day now for Monday through Thursday. With play beginning at 10 PM Brisbane time, the Klassic is a Wednesday morning breakfast event in the states at 0730/800 EDT and a lunch time tourney in Europe at 1130/1200 UTC. Registration this week in the Klassic hit 15. A great turnout for a new tourney. Congrats to the new TD, KissMyAss.

KMA is also offering tourneys at about the same time Monday through Friday. Ask her for details. If one or more become regularly scheduled, we will add them to our list as well. With the Klassic, Stubbies and Sunday Session we had 26 players participating in the down under tourneys this week -- WTG, mates!

With 215 entries and 95 unique players in the 14 different tourneys this week, we set participation highs. This was our first time to exceed 200 entries and 90 players. I hope we continue to grow in all categories.

Albeit silently, vegas_vic continues to dominate FIBS TPR tourneys. With two wins this week in nine tourneys  coupled with three wins in seven tourneys in each of the past two weeks, vegas_vic takes Player of the Week for three consecutive weeks and secures a commanding lead in YTD points.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH
April 2011

Here are the totals for the "tournament month" of April and Year to Date (YTD) totals for the top 64 tournament players by total TPR points.

Congrats to vegas_vic for a record setting month in April and a dominating lead of 91 points in YTD totals. Even with a slow first week with only 17 points, vegas_vic left the rest of us in the dust with three consecutive impressive weeks in which he won 8 tourneys. With 212 points, vegas_vic becomes the first TPR Player of the Month with more than 200 points. This measure is even more impressive when compared with other top players in April. Second place. Cloxo finished with 116 points, while third place rif_raf came in with 89 points.

I hope you are enjoying these listings. If you don't see your name below, join us for a regularly scheduled tourney at FIBS. Winning will get you more points. Points are allocated according to registration. Winning a tourney with 25 players earns the winner 25 points, second gets 15 points, etc. So, just playing adds points to your YTD total.

Finally, many thanks to aviator for his dedicated work for four months to get us current only a few weeks ago, after the first week of April. The task of mining data from various sources and messaging it into shape for our early spreadsheets was demanding and intimidating. I would have dropped this project a long time ago without his encouragement and support. Along the way we have both learned a lot about Excel use, collaborating on a project like this, and become friends -- all more than worth it, IMO.

Increasing Participation
Last week was record setting in terms of tournament participation. This week, we are off to an even faster start with 24 registered players in the Monday Three/Five, a likely record for any Three/Five tourney. With 12 players in Monday's Work Can Wait Forever, I was thinking that might be a single day record of 36 players. That thought didn't last long. The Tuesday Three/Five and Bago combined totalled 44 players!

New Developments
My TPR spreadsheet, now 5 Mb but running smoothly, has been substantially revamped for importing tourney data with a new TourneyBot command, SUMMARY-CSV xxxx. Checking out these new data entry features with now almost instant checksum validation, I am discovering that posting here at FIBSboard is getting as easy as copy, paste, validate, filter, sort, and write these leads. This is a remarkable improvement over our earlier version, just ask aviator.

For this week and maybe next, I will try giving you daily preview updates by midnight my time. If this proves doable and we have sufficient demand, i.e. readership and increasing tourney participation, we may continue this in future weeks. For now, I am like a kid playing with a new toy, but that won't last long.

The TPR Team (me, Tom, aviator, and now stog) are working on making data entry, validation, and posting simpler and quicker still. Our long term goal is to prepare TourneyBot and/or Excel to make this available and ready to post almost instantaneously at the end of each tourney. For now, we humans are still required in several key steps along the way.

Last week when I began making a daily PREVIEW post, I was replacing each PREVIEW with each new post. That lead to a subtle error which KDP caught. The error was human, not spreadsheet based. For now, I am leaving these daily PREVIEW posts in place to emulate how our now pending semiautomatic posting will perform. You will notice a few other changes, hopefully improvements, almost daily now.

During this burst of development I will also be making posts like these to keep all abreast of what we are doing and/or thinking. I will try to be brief, but that is often hard for me to do. Now would also be a good time for any of you players or readers to suggest other enhancements or offer critiques.

Almost any and all comments are welcome, but please try to stay on topic, i.e. no ranting, otherwise I will  remove off topic posts without warning or comment. Despite often contrary evidence, I remain optimistic we can be civil and avoid acting like juvenile delinquents without too much supervision.

as a test of how long it takes me to make one of these preview posts, i watched the last match today and began the posting process immediately after it ended .. even with very unusual problems logging into FIBSboard (three logins and resetting compatibility view), i was done in 8 minutes!

i had already loaded data from the first tourney, but ordinarily with Excel and FIBSboard both open and behaving i think a manual Preview post can be made in under 10 minutes .. don't expect me or anyone else to hang around and do that after each match, but it bodes well for us being able to provide a Preview on a daily basis by some reasonable deadline

as we move toward further automating the process, we should be able to provide daily updates even more rapidly  .. whether there is demand or need to do that only time will tell

of course, just as i was about to post this commentary a few minutes ago, i noticed that i had left off 1 of the 23 players in the Three/Five, another operator error .. regardless, the process looks solid and the work required to make it happen is on a steeply declining curve

TPR Player of the Month Race

With the weekend tourneys approaching the race for Player of the Month in May could not be closer. Entering play Monday, vegas_vic held a 12 point lead in the race over Perfect_Celle. The two contenders met each other in the Thursday Three/Five finals where vegas_vic had "Go to Vegas immediately!" dice winning 5-0.

However, with wins in Work Can Wait Forever, Tuesday's BagoOlympics and a strong finish in Thursday's Bago, Perfect_Celle now leads in TPR points for the week by 12.

In other words, it is a deadheat.

Good luck to both in an exciting race for TPR Player of the Month honors.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Here are the totals for the "tournament month" of May for the top 32 tournament players and other tournament winners during May by total TPR points. May consisted of five (5) "tournament weeks". A "tournament week" always begins on a Monday and ends on a Sunday. The "tournament month" consists of all "tournament weeks" beginning within that calendar month. This definition gives us 4 months each year consisting of 5 "tournament weeks". We do it this way for simplicity in totaling the results.

Last month during the four weeks of April, we congratulated vegas_vic for a record setting month becoming the first player to earn more than 200 points in a month with 212 points. In April, second place. Cloxo finished with 116 points, while third place rif_raf came in with 89 points. May is a completely different story

In May, the TPR race could not have been more exciting. Perfect_Celle set his sights on vegas_vic early in the month and battled to the wire until the last tourney in the month. Entering play in the last week of May, vegas_vic held a 12 point lead in the Player of the Month race. By Sunday, 5-June, the last day of the "tournament month" of May, Perfect_Celle held a 16 point lead going into the Bloody Mary. Perfect_Celle was knocked out in the third round of the Bloody Mary, earning 4 TPR points tied for 5th place. With 21 players in the field, vegas_vic needed a win and the associated 21 points to win the Player of the Month title a second consecutive month and win it he did.

Congrats to both vegas_vic and Perfect_Celle for an exciting race. Special congratulations to vegas_vic winner of our Player of the Month for a second consecutive month.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH -- PREVIEW
June 2011

Here is a glimpse at the totals for the "tournament month" of June for the top 32 tournament players and other tournament winners during June by total TPR points. June consists of four (4) "tournament weeks". A "tournament week" always begins on a Monday and ends on a Sunday. The "tournament month" consists of all "tournament weeks" beginning within that calendar month. This definition gives us 4 months each year consisting of 5 "tournament weeks". We do it this way for simplicity in totaling the results.

For two consecutive months, vegas_vic dominated tournament play winning Player of the Month in April and May. With no tournament wins in the first two weeks of June, vegas_vic has apparently taken a vacation from tournament play and from FIBS as he has not been logged in since June 18th.

In June with the noticeable absence of vegas_vic, the TPR race opened up to other regular players. I took an early lead winning Player of the Week in the closely contested first tournament week of June, Week 23, by winning the Bloody Mary with a full field of 32 players. I have continued to play regularly and managed to win Player of the Week in the next two weeks as well. This has resulted in a fifty plus point lead in the Player of the Month race. Anything is possible, my lead, any of the top 10 or more players below could finish strong and pass me for the honors. Good luck and good games to all in this the last week of June ending Sunday.

If you don't see your name below, join us for a regularly scheduled tourney at FIBS. Points are allocated according to registration. Winning a tourney with 25 players earns the winner 25 points, second gets 15 points, etc. Just playing adds points to your YTD total, winning gets you more.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH -- FINAL TOTALS

For two consecutive months, vegas_vic dominated tournament play winning Player of the Month in April and May and building a substantial lead in YTD points with 807 points, well ahead of a pack of five others around 600 points. With no tournament wins in the first two weeks of June, vegas_vic apparently decided to take a vacation from  tournament play and from FIBS. He has not been logged in since June 18th.

In June with the noticeable absence of vegas_vic, the TPR race opened up to other regular players. I took an early lead winning the Bloody Mary with a full field of 32 players and Player of the Week in the closely contested first week of June, Week 23. I continued to play regularly winning Player of the Week in the next two weeks as well. This resulted in a fifty plus point lead in the Player of the Month race which proved insurmountable.

If you don't see your name below, join us for a regularly scheduled tourney at FIBS. Points are allocated according to registration. Winning a tourney with 25 players earns the winner 25 points, second gets 15 points, etc. Just playing adds points to your YTD total, winning gets you more.

June consisted of four (4) "tournament weeks". Remember, a "tournament week" always begins on a Monday and ends on a Sunday. The "tournament month" consists of all "tournament weeks" beginning within that calendar month. This definition gives us 4 months each year consisting of 5 "tournament weeks". We do it this to simplify keeping track of the results. Here are the totals for the "tournament month" of June for the top 32 tournament players and other tournament winners during June by total TPR points.

TPR Expansion

Since mid-May the Wednesday Krazy Kiwi Klassic tourney has been a part of our TPR coverage. We limited our coverage to the Wednesday tourney, but the TD, KissMyAss, ran other tourneys in the same time slot daily (Mon-Fri). During those first few weeks it was unclear whether the series would continue on a daily basis. That uncertainty has disappeared.

During June, the Krazy Kiwi Klassic running at 1200 UTC Monday through Friday has become an established well attended regular tourney at FIBS. Our congratulations to KMA for creating this new and popular tournament series in a new time slot.

Our mission at TPR is to provide coverage for regular FIBS based tourneys for the purpose of promoting tournament play and enhancing the tournament experience for all players. Therefore, effective with the first TPR week in July, we are extending TPR coverage to include the new Krazy Kiwi Klassic Klub series.

Regular Kiwi players like Cigale, IknowItAll, Krazula, and Damma will now have new TPR points opportunities. The rest of us will too.

Congrats again to KMA whose dedication and energy as a new TD has provided us all with new opportunities for tournament play.
