I note that the Bloody Mary Tournament continues to hand out first round byes to the top ranked entrants. Tom is I know working on an adaptation to the "seed by ranking" option so that the higher rankings will be kept apart, while each entrant has an equal chance of a bye. I hope that he will be able to complete this soon, but in the meantime the top-rated players still enjoy the huge advantage of a free ride into the second round and additionally, a guarantee of a minimum 3 TPR points.
While Bloody Mary was a stand alone tournament it didn't matter much. Players like me who think that the draw should be random just didn't enter, although paradoxically 60 thinks that the rule encourages entry from high ranked players! However, now that the BM is part of a series of tournaments with points awarded towards an end of year competition, the award of free points to those with a high ranking can no longer be justified, if indeed it ever could. While we await the new-and-improved "seeding by rating" option, shouldn't the Bloody Mary revert to a random draw? The fact that it has been proposed by me shouldn't prevent 60 from conceding the fairness of this and changing his rules.

i've never given any thought to how many pts i'm likely to get from any given tourney.  i don't play in enough tourneys during the week to ever qualify for the player of the week/month awards.  on  the other hand after waiting 15 to 20 mins for the tourney to begin the last thing i want is a bye and having to wait around for another 15 to 20 mins for my first match. i would much rather be playing, even if its the lowest rated player in the tournament.  i realize that unless you have a perfect bracket of 32 byes are unavoidable, but i would be in favor of random seeding.

if i ever own another dog and it is an English Bulldog, i am going to name my new dog dorbel .. it will not be a random decision

regardless, bulldog, i appreciate your persistence in pointing out a perceived problem with my use of seeding by rating in the Bloody Mary .. yes, KDP, i often dislike having to wait for that first round match when i draw a bye in a tourney .. for me, that is a much more convincing arguement for change than fairness

since starting the Bloody Mary, it has been a source of fun on Sundays as well as more than a few improvements and innovations to TourneyBot .. FIBS based tourneys in general have never been more popular

i will continue to use a seeded by rating bracket as the default for Bloody Marys during this season .. however, i will sprinkle in a few unexpected twists as well .. join us any Sunday for another fun season!

Bloody Mary Season Championship -- Season VII

Our seventh post-season championship, BMSC VII, is open for registration. Winners of the 32 weekly tourneys in Season VII which ended last Christmas Day will compete for bragging rights as a Bloody Mary Champion. Thanks to Tom's excellent programming, TourneyBot is now configured to manage the entire tournament automatically, including generating invites and seeding.

Due to our late start, I am extending registration until midnight (ET) Monday, March 26 (0400 UTC). Since registration opened Sunday, Mar-11, reminders were sent by TourneyBot messages whenever eligible players login at FIBS. Currently, only one (1) of the twenty-three (23) eligible players has not yet registered.


Tourney Seeding
Players are seeded by number of wins and TPR points earned in each win, i.e. number of registered players. Once started, TourneyBot pairings will be final. Boldfacing below indicates player has NOT yet registered. The seed order is as follows:

Registration and Play
Play will begin Tuesday, 27-March, or when the bracket fills.  I am now deeming the bracket officially filled.

Once started, TourneyBot will advise registered players of pairings each time they login. A 7-day clock begins the moment a pairing is available. TourneyBot will also advise players of their clock settings periodically when they or their opponents login.  Players are expected to arrange and complete their matches within a three to five day time frame. Warnings will be issued ONCE by TourneyBot 48 hours before the 7-day deadline. Extensions will be granted ONLY on request by the TD. Otherwise the match may be awarded by TourneyBot or the TD.

Bracket Filled

Earlier today, three (3) of the twenty-three (23) eligible players were not yet registered. Since then two of those three have registered. Since the remaining eligible player hasn't logged in since September, I am declaring the bracket filled. Play will start tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21.

BMSC VII
Rules

The Bloody Mary Championship Series (BMCS VII) will be a Single Elimination tourney. Eligible players are the 23 winners during the 32 week Season VII which ended on Christmas Day. Tournament bracket seeding is determined by number of Bloody Mary wins and total TPR points earned in each win.

Match Length
Normal matches will be five (5) point matches. The final match will be for seven (7) points. Please be aware that once a pairing is set, any match played of the same length between the two paired players will be considered by TourneyBot as the official match in this tourney as well.

Arranging Matches
It is the responsibility of the players to arrange a mutually convenient time to play. While TourneyBot will provide a reminder of your scheduled match each time you login at FIBS, it is your responsibility to find a time to play your opponent. Often this is no more than offering or accepting an invite to play when both of you are on-line. If that doesn't happen, please message your opponent using either the FIBS MESSAGE command or by sending a message here at FIBSboard. If players are registered users here, messages will be forwarded to their email address as well.

Multi-day Tourneys
The BMSC VII is an example of a multi-day tourney at FIBS. All tourney players are familiar with live tourneys at FIBS where TourneyBot manages a clock and issues TIMEOUT warnings. As needed, TourneyBot will AWARD a match on time. A multi-day tourney uses the same approach, but the clock set in increments of days.

In this tourney, we will use a 7 day clock managed by TourneyBot. After 5 days, TourneyBot will issue a WARNING if a scheduled match is not finished. This warning will be issued ONCE. It is the players responsibility to arrange and complete their match. If either player anticipates problems completing their match, please advise your TD, me (sixtie) or Tom. If necessary, 1-2 day extensions may be granted on request. Otherwise, we will allow TourneyBot to AWARD after 7 days.

In previous BMCS multi-day tourneys, TIMEOUT with a 7 day clock has very seldom been a problem. Most matches finish in less than 3 days from when the pairings are announced. Indeed, even with a 7 day clock, it would not surprise me for this tourney to finish in 2-3 weeks or less. In the past, TourneyBot has done a great job at managing the multi-day format. With continuing enhancements, we expect these multi-day tourneys to become much more common and familiar to players, old and new.

Once play begins, all players receive TourneyBot messages concerning their pairings and clock status each time they login. In addition, a Challonge bracket will be created and available for reference. Top seeds who may receive a bye in round one, will be advised of their round two opponent as soon as determined.

Challonge Bracket

When we started play, Challonge was down. Therefore, we don't have the very handy Challonge bracket automatically updated by TourneyBot. However, I have created a Challonge bracket which we can update manually as matches are completed. I'll leave it up to the winner of each match to attempt to update your match result. If you are unable to do so, please leave a message for your TD, me (sixtie) or Tom. We will attempt to keep the bracket current by checking results daily, but be advised that it will not be updated automatically by TourneyBot. At anytime, TourneyBot pairings announced when you login are correct.

BMSC VII
The Elite Eight

The thirty-two weeks of Season VII are now reduced to the championship quarter-finals, the elite eight in bracketspeak.

Play started on Wednesday, March 21, less than two weeks ago. While we're off to a slower start than anticipated, the next three rounds should go quickly with remaining contenders scheduling their matches at FIBS as needed. TourneyBot will continue to prompt players each time they login with current pairings and clock status. Players have seven (7) days from the time a pairing is determined to complete their assigned match. A warning will be issued by TourneyBot after 5 days.

Of the 23 registered, two players, Im_not_gimmie_luck and sweets, received a TIMEOUT after the seven day clock (extended by a few days) expired. Two players, WiFi and Cigale, withdrew due to unexpected conflicts in availability. All other matches were completed at FIBS within the exixting clock constraints.

Remember, the Challonge brackets are being updated manually due to a glitch at start-up. Therefore, the live bracket images displayed here are not updated instantaneously by TourneyBot. In all cases, TourneyBot pairings are to be considered the official pairings and results. As matches are completed, please report the results to me (sixtie), Tom or aviator. One of us will then update the brackets
