Title: Fibsboard Forum Match 18 Game 4 Move 38 Herd to move

juanz keeps his home board shape by running to the ace point and the Herd now has 11 to play.  Eight candidate moves to choose from, none of which leave blots for juanz to have a pop at. There are another 17 available, many of which do just that. Ask if you want more choices.

5-pt match, juanz 0-4 Herd, Crawford
Pipcount: juanz (red) 73, Herd (black) 44

After a full day, we have fewer votes than usual, maybe some of the Herd are away for the weekend. Only one vote in it so far. Anyone want to say why ripping off four and keeping the 4-prime blockade is better, or worse, than reducing the prime and bearing off only two?

It's 4 off, always desirable when opponent has a speed board, he has a crashed board, he's likely to run on his roll or crash his home board further, if he stays, 6-4 is our worst, if he runs with one checker 6-4 goes from leaving 2 blots to only one, if he rolls 5-5 or 6-6 we'll be overjoyed we took 4 off.

Rip 4. If the acepoint was anchored, giving us a roll to leave a double shot, that might be different, but here we leave a single shot after 64; if we put a man on 5 and a man on 4 then 65 leaves a single shot; if we put two men up on our five then 63 and 53 leave us in bad shape next time.

On the other side of the balance, four off means we're closer to the point where we'd be favourite even if hit, and we neutralise 44 as a running roll for juanz and gain 43 as a board-buster.

It's a small point, but if the acepoint were anchored , ripping 4 off wouldn't be an option.

With the vote tied, it seems right to go with ripping four. This was the move we heard arguments for, while the supporters of the more cautious alternative were silent. Speak up, if you want your point of view considered!

BGBltz has 6-5(2), 1-off(2) as very slightly superior to 1-off(4), by 0.001. What does XG calculate?
