Title: European Fibs Party 2006
Post by: Hardy_whv on May 30, 2006, 10:21:39 PM
Hallo allerseits,

Hardy

Hi everyone,

as the FIBS Party Challenge Cup was won by Switzerland during the FIBS-Party 2005 (http://www.hardyhuebener.de/engl/photos/fibsparty2005_1.html) it was decided to do the 2006 party there. Presently the party is planned for 21st/22nd of July, but the venue is not decided yet (Luzern or Basel possibly). It's a bit short-term, but I hope that FIBSters are very spontaneous people  B)

So please mark your calendar and wait for more information here to come soon.

Liebe Grüße,

Hardy

Hallo allerseits,

4. Die Wertung im Swiss erfolgt wie folgt:

- + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + -

Hi everyone,

in a few weeks the party will start already. With this message I want to inform you about the rules for the tournament on Saturday:

1. First, all Players will play 5 rounds (of 5-point matches) in a Swiss mode . The first pairing will be decided by draw, in the next rounds, players are paired by the amount of matches won.

2. The 8 best players of the Swiss round will proceed to the Main , players ranked 9 to 16 will play the Consolation. Both main and consolation are K.O.-systems (single elimination), the player who loses a match is out. Matches in main and consolation are 5-point matches, the finals are 7-pointers.

3. For the main, also the third place is played for (by the losers of round 2 of the main). This match is a 5-pointer.

4. Ranking in the Swiss round is established as follows:
4a. Amount of matches won.
4b. If players are equal in the amount of matches won, the Buchholz-Value is evaluated. Buchholz is calculated as the sum of the amount of won matches by all opponents played against in the Swiss.
4c. If players are still equal after Buchholz, and this is deciding for place 8/9 (border between main and consolation) or 16/17 (border of consolation or out of the tournament), a match of 3 points is played by those players.

5. The tournament is played according the international rules of backgammon. Doubling cube is used, Gammons / Backgammons count (regardless the position of the doubling cube), Crawford rule applies. In case, two players donââ,¬â,,¢t agree, the organizing committee will take the decision.

If all that sounds toooo complicated, its probably due to my poor english  The system itself is simple. You will see!

I would like to play longer matches in main and consolation, but I fear we will run out of time otherwise. I ask everyone participating in the tournament, to play fluently and report results immediately, so the next round can be prepared/started.

Prizes will be given to the 4 best players in the main, and the 2 best players of the consolation. Also I have a little present for the FIBSter, who had to travel the farthest distance to Basel. Additionally the winner of the main receives the ââ,¬Å"FIBS Party Challenge Cupââ,¬Â.

See you in Basel soon,

Hardy   B)

P.S.: At least 50% of all players should have a backgammon board with them, otherwise we have a bottleneck during the tournament

Since the tournament took a long time in Cologne and we almost got thrown out of the pub where we played, I suggest we might take up nutsch's suggestion of compulsory doubling the game after some 30/45 min or so of a match, with the cube still in the middle.
Just a suggestion. That rule can also be introduced only after the tournament director declares it may become late, while the matches before may be played in normal mode.
Cheers

You are right, I almost forgot. It became a bit late  :sleepey:

Either I will push the players more than last time or we cut the swiss round to 4 matches for each player.

The Danish Backgammon Federation has quite good Clock Rules (http://www.dbgf.dk/download/DBgFTournamentRules2001.pdf). For a 5-point match the players have 35 minutes time. If one player is running out of time his opponent is rewarded with 2 points. If that decides the match, the match is over. Otherwise both players get 5 more minutes on their clock.

Perhaps I will bring some chess clocks to keep control of the time ....

Making some preliminary flight enquiries - the ryan air option (Ã,£0.01 per person per flight) is clearly the cheapest.  The usual drawback applies - the closest they fly to Basel is Friedrichshafen, anyone got any ideas on how easy /difficult it will be to get from there to Basel - before I go ahead and book anything?  We are currently looking at coming on the 18th July and leaving 23.

Diane,
you may travel from Friedrichshafen to Basel at every other hour (13:04, 15:04. 17:04) in about 2 1/2 hours for around 30 EUR (~20L) one way. There are other connections including travelling by ship (Friedrichshafen is located at Bodensee, a very big lake bordered by Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and means of transport i've never heard of. Check http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en) in english. If you buy your return ticket only in advance (at your home printer, e.g., you may pay less - down to 50%, second person pays less too).
Have a nice journey,
Schigolch

Hallo Cassandra,

wo in Basel?

It will be  at " Cafe delmar" it's a very newly opened cafe and they don't have a website yet! yes, it's a pity! would be nice if u can see how the place looks like, but I can assure you, it's  very cozy.

Here is the address: http://tel.search.ch/detail/d056bd56b2f5ab10 (http://tel.search.ch/detail/d056bd56b2f5ab10)

From the German rail station u can take Tram number "6" direction Allschwil and u have to get off station "Heuwaage"

From the Swiss rail station either u walk down to Heuwaage ( around 5 mins ) or take the tram number "10" direction "Ettingen"

Looking forward seeing you here  :D

Hi diane,

Quote... when do the hotel recommendations come?

I think samirah will compile a list soon. But I know that many (erdbeere, Paul_William, Schigolch and myself already booked the Ramada Hotel Basel.

Bookings can be done over their homepage: http://www.ramada-treff.de/ (http://www.ramada-treff.de/)

Although it's not cheap, it's cheap for swiss conditions.

Looking forward to seeing you again (and making some photos of your fingernails)!

Here's the list of hotels in and around Basel!

The venue is located in district 3 but u can take whichever hotel in district 1-8 and you can still access the place where we're playing easily either by tram or foot.

Cu soon!  :P

P.S. most  fibsters booked hotel "Ramada Plaza" if u want to book this hotel too please use http://hotel.de/ (http://hotel.de/) it's cheaper than booking it  directly in their site. http://www.ramada-treff.de/ (http://www.ramada-treff.de/)

For those coming with the car to basel I would suggest to just leave the car somewhere youÃ,´ll find it again soon as you see some trams. Basel is not a big city and has a good public transport net. A ticket for the day costs sfr 8.--

public transport (http://www.bvb.ch/bvb_liniennetz_2006.gif)

The Cafe delmar is in the middle of the center. From the tramstation "Heuwaage" it is just about 15m to walk. I dont know this cafe yet, so I will verify this 15m, maybe its 20m. Because of the mostly missing direct connection you go out of the tram at "Barfüsserplatz" and walk the rest (10 min.). The direct tram from the railwaystation is the yellow nr.10 in direction of "Ettingen/Flüh/Rodersdorf". For those who arrive from Germany can go out the train at "Bad. Bahnhof Basel" and take the tram nr.6 who will directly drive you to the "Heuwaage".

From the EuroAirport there is only one bus nr.50 to the railwaystation.

The Ramadan is at the "Messeplatz". From "Messeplatz" to "Heuwaage" its only 5 min.

At the "Marktplatz" youÃ,´ll see a significant red building, the town hall (http://www.flickr.com/photos/benjaminbollig/80286281/). At the right of it there is a kind of reception called "Stadtladen" for tourists can get a map and infos of the city.

A Taxi from the Airport or the railwaystation to the Ramadan will cost you somewhere between sfr. 20.-- and 30.--

Cassandra,

Myself IÃ,´m from Basel. IÃ,´ll be on vacation from the 26th of june till 19th of july and not online regularly at this time. But before the vacation and after, the 19th, 20th and 21st of July, I offer to reply to questions concerning the where and what when you arrive in Basel.

How to get to Basel without buying a swiss motorway vignette
Cars coming from Germany should take exit Weil am Rhein to leave the motorway, which is first exit after the interchange weil am rhein, right before the border, then go straight ahead until you pass the border in friedlingen.
Then head for dreirosenbrücke (a bridge) and for sbb station. people from basel might add to these hints.

other hints.
take your id, switzerland is not the EU, you may buy their currency cheaper in germany.
don't carry salad - might go wrong :)

[i'll take the last advice most serious :) (der übersäzzer).]

Cheers,
Schigolch

We can allmost forget public transport during the summermonth because of roadworks. There will be no tram between "Schifflände", "Bankverein" and "Heuwaage". But everything is in walkingdistance.

OK - I have booked the Ramada for the weekend - and am thinking about extending my stay at the easyjet hotel in Basel - recommended by gogul - how far is that hotel from where we are staying or located - can anyone tell me?

For german cities (and bordering ones like Basel) I recommend http://www.stadtplandienst.de/ (http://www.stadtplandienst.de/) .
Insert "Ort" (place, city) and "Straße oder Objekt/Ortsteil" (street or object/quarter) and press "GO".
Then at the left you can change the "Kartengröße" (size of the map) and the "Zoomstufe" (zoom level).

Stadtplandienst.de covers whole Germany and has more accurate street data than other services I know.

To all fibsters coming with the car, I really recommend that after you check-in in your hotel that you park your car on a "WHITE"parking area and make sure that it's  for free! (kostenlos) There are some of this parking space a bit out of the center, but since you'll get a mobility ticket from the hotel you can take the tram free of charge and just collect your car after the party!

Parking  in Basel is  a very EXPENSIVE thing ! I'm sure you can spend this money in more interesting stuff  than paying your parking   ;)

Drive well and see you soon  :)

From the central railway-station to the cafe "Del Mar" its five minutes to walk.
If you click on the map below:
when you go out the station you will stand at the "C" of the Centralbahnstr. In front of you youÃ,´ll see a park, the "Elisabethenanlage" and there you turn into the "Wallstrasse" and go down the stairs "Bollwerkpromendade", which will lead you direktly to the "Heuwaage" where you find the Del Mar. The map-drawer was a very nice man, house-nr of the Del Mar is 30.
Central Station to Del Mar (http://www.mybasel.ch/verkehr_stadtplan_karte.cfm?X=611217&Y=266632&Jump=3&Zoom=500&Type=regular)

WeÃ,´ll have the possibility to play outside directly at the Rhine-board in a nice buvette if we and the weather wants and go back to Del Mar after dinner.

CU then, looking forward  ^_^

Hi all,

as u can see on the list above this party will be very, very international!   and because of this I thought of making a sort of "exchange gifts". Meaning u have to bring "1" gift and this should be . . . .

1. something traditional, something that symbolizes the country where you live in.(preferably non-food)
2. max 20 euro ( if u feel like being generous . . .  it's also ok!   :P )
3. gift wrapped.

Gifts will be numbered and we will have a lottery. If you have some questions regarding this please feel free to ask me.   samirahkern@hotmail.com

Any more ideas to make this party as FUN as possible are very much welcome!

Thanks,
sam!

first: i was not able to say this all in english, so i did something in german, the rest i will translate soon.

hello @ll!

i like the idea with the presents.

but first time i heard about this, i didn't like this:
> 1. something traditional, something that symbolizes the country

so i asked me myself questions
- what (nonfood) is my country?
- what (nonfood) symbolizes my coutry?

all presents i thought about was something to eat or to drink!
and all of them represented not whole germany, only the region i live.

i talked with several people. there are two things i heard representing germany or beeing typical german.

in this way i had very interesting and good discussions and plenty of good thoughts and experiments about deutschland, heimat, schwarzwald, wein!, bier!, kaese, schweiz :), buergerInnen, sterne, symbole, grenzen, laender, welt, meisterschaften, geld, gesetze, visionen, utopien, konkrete, universum, freiheit, liebe, etc.

and maybe ... i found a present, that symbolizes my country in my way :)

but if i did not, i will in den wald gehen, den ich als kind kennengelernt habe, um dort einen tannenzapfen zu holen. das waere vielleicht das einzige geschenk, was mein (heimat-)land fuer mich symbolisieren koennte - ausgenommen meine sprache, aber die kann man nicht verschenken, oder?

thanks samirah!

Hallo zusammen,

Thanks,

hi all,

i know it is rather short notice, but i would like to join the fun. please add me to the list.

could somebody - especially the people that live in basle - answer the following:

is there a way to book a hotel without owning a credit card? if not, i might have to do it in basle on friday afternoon.
is it in that case better to get off the train at basel bad bf or at basel sbb? i believe the latter is the main train station?!

and btw: i don't own a board, i don't need it playing at fibs ;-) maybe somebody from basle could bring more than one??

hope to get to know you all on friday!

Hi runnerup,

great that you are joining us. Unfortunately I have no detail knowledge about Basel. So I can't help you searching a hotel. Some of us booked a room in the Ramada Hotel. Perhaps they accept reservations by telephone without credit card? Just call them: +41 (0) 61 / 560 40 00

I hope that enough people will bring a board with them, so it should not hurt if come without.

Looking forward to meeting you soon,

I just arrived in Basel. Presently 34Ã,° Celsius. Much tooooo hot. A bit rain would be great but is very unlikely. So no furs required here.

To runnerup:
Over the weekend a room in the Ramada is 150,- CH per night. There are probably cheaper hotels here, but have no recommendation available.

I was behind padski in at least one shot, other than that - keeping well out of the way, as usual :-) My pink board takes a good picture though   ;)

It was a great party, with lots of lovely touches - especially the signed t shirts and gift exchanges (which reminds me - I still have a fridge full of lovely German beer to  go home to  :D  :D )

We are both very much looking forward to the next one - and seriously considering another London event - if I can find a suitable venue.

The Casino will be replaced with a new and modern building, but the inside will remain, as the concert hall is classified as a historical monument. To avoid the disturbing noise of the passing trams in the hall they wont use sandbags, but 600 steelsprings (doingdoingdoing).
