and yes i had thought of moving up my straggler with the 1 last roll, to await a 5 ;)

Yep, moving up the straggler would have been the right thing to do.  By moving it up, you kill 6s and give yourself 5s to escape - both 5s and 6s play well; leaving it where it is means you need a 6 to escape while 5s force you to play in your home board, so  6s play well but 5s don't.
