Can anyone out there help, pleae?  I am trying to download GNU Backgammon to a Mac running OSX 10.3, without success.  I get to step 2 but when I try to download and install the shared libraries I get a french web site (Noos), whose page cannot be found (page-non-trouvee).  I am following the instructions to either control-click or drag to desktop before trying to open the download link.

I've heared good things from fibsters about GNU but after reading some of the comments on its web site, I do kind of wonder whether no GNUs is good GNUs after all.  Still, I'm keen to at least try it out.

TIA, stiefnu

Hi stiefnu,

The download page for gnubg for OS X doesn't exist anymore, so the description on gnubg.org is outdated. Unfortunately, none of the (current) developers own a Mac. This makes it a bit difficult to provide installation archives for this platform. The issue has been recognised, however, since this question comes up regularly.

I'm not aware of any recent gnubg install for a mac. Apart from compiling the sources on your own, which would give you the newest version on success, I've only heard of a rather ancient version of gnubg for mac (0.13, current is 0.14.3):

You'd need Fink ( http://fink.sourceforge.net/ ) for it and then download and install the gnubg package with it.
Here is a download and install quickstart guide: http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php?phpLang=en

Thanks tryout,

I downloaded Fink but didn't manage to get Gnu up and running.  I fink maybe I'll patiently wait till Gnu is upgraded for Mac OSX...

Hi, all.

In my iMac  10.3.9 Panther, I have Gnu 0.14.1 for Mac, downloaded in April 2005, HERE.
Is better that you run it with X11 than XDarwin.
Follow the instructions: the "position" of the folders are very important, for Gnu! Don't put a folder in another one: all the items MUST BE in ONE folder called.. "Gnu" or what ever you want. Except "sw", this one MUST BE directly on the hard disk.
You can choose the language, my is in italian (have a look HERE is in italian only).
Remember: first run X11 and with this run Gnu.

Hi Claudio, thanks for the response.

Well I tried that but get the same problem as noted in my first posting, i.e.:  I get to step 2 but when I try to download and install the shared libraries I get a french web site (Noos), whose page cannot be found (page-non-trouvee). I am following the instructions to either control-click or drag to desktop before trying to open the download link.

Hey ho,

Hi stiefnu,

gnub is running on 10.3.9 here in english and i have followed the same instructions on the link that claudio_first added. He is right you only have to use the X11 server of Panther.  You will find X11 on the developers disk3, delivered with your install disk for OS X 10.3.

If you only miss the sw files, pm me and maybe i can upload a copy of mine sw files to you.

Well, I dunno wot I'm doing wrong  :(

I have got the X11 server OK (step 1 on the gnu website) but get nowhere with step 2, as described in my previous postings.  And it's not just me either - I know of someone running OSX 10.4 on their mac (I'm on 10.3), and they have they same problem.

But thanks for the advice anyway!

Cheers, stiefnu

I run OS 10.3 and would be very happy to add Gnu to my system. I could teach it how to play BG the cannon way.
