The savedgames count includes only matches that were dropped or intentionally saved

True
False

Patti

I'm curious about people's understanding of the savedgames information.

Paul_William

By 'savedgames count' do you mean the info shown at http://www.fibs.com/savedgames/ or the info which used to be shown by repbot?

KDP

is there a 3rd type of saved game?  it should be pretty simple, a saved game is one that wasnt played to its conclusion when the players started  the match.  the reason it wasnt finished was

1.  the players agreed to finish later

2.  the match was dropped.

the reasons the match was dropped can vary but as far as i can see these are the only two circumstances that define "saved" game.

3. unlimited matches

4. unfinished match ( ie a match currently being played)

5. resumed matches that haven't been cleared from the server

right?

I took "dropped" to mean intentionally dropped, as in what droppers do. A broken connection followed by an inability to reconnect in time to resume before the opponent played someone else or went elsewhere wouldn't be a dropped game in that sense.

Patti

Paul_William, they're the same thing.  RepBot just scraped the information from http://fibs.com/savedgames/

Patti

The answer is below.  (Highlight the text with your cursor to see it.)

No, the savegames list includes matches that were dropped, matches that were intentionally saved by the participants, unlimited matches (which fall under intentionally saved), matches currently being played, and matches that have recently been completed regardless of whether they had ever been intentionally saved or not.  In other words, if you start a match and finish it immediately, it may still show up on the savedgames list for a day.

A lot of people are confused by this, and I think it's largely because RepBot stripped off the definition of what the numbers actually meant.

burper

Wrong Patti, RepBot is far more accurate with the "saved" game count than FIBS is, because it eliminates *most* unsaved games from the count.
I think most people are confused because *FIBS* continues to name the metric "saved games", implying very subtlely that the games are "saved".

Of course, you can continue to blame everything that is wrong with FIBS on RepBot, that is your right.

You're right because you run Fibs and you have the power, Patti.   :)  Doesn't mean you have to pull Repbot.     People have the option to accept Repbot or not.  They have a "gag" feature, as you were so apt in instructing me so many times long ago.     Fact is, Repbot gives far more info than the saved games page.  FAR more.  It can be interpreted by most players who have been regulars on Fibs for a month or less.  The subject is frequently discussed in shouts.  IMHO, I think you're wrong to pull Repbot, but you certainly have that right.  No denying that.  Just my two cents.   ;)  Thanks for keeping Fibs up for us.

Patti

For the record, I did *not* pull repbot.  I asked the owner to fix the problem that induced people to create piles of sockpuppets.  The owner chose to log it off.

socksey

Thank you for clarifying that.  I made the mistake of believing the shouts that said you gave the owner a deadline and that if that wasn't met, you would pull Repbot.

Patti

I did.  I gave the owner until June 1 to close the loophole, or to at least present me with a plan for doing so.

I think RepBot was very useful, but Patti is right in insisting that the vouch/complaint feature should be modified, so people can't be ganged up. Now, you may vouch/complain for/about another fibster, just in case that you've played a match with him/her. An intelligent modification, I would call it. RepBot was created to fight the abusers of FIBS, right? Then it should not be used as a tool by the same jerks, right?

The most useful feature of Repbot was it's alarming feature when a saved match opponent would logs in. This way you could easily finish most of your saved matches. Now, we must rely upon the "waitfor" command, but it's not as impressive. Yet, it will do the job.

All in all, I think we will see RepBot again, but this time with such features that will be in line with the good intentions behind it's invention.

Patti, are you sure Burper isn't right?  I could swear that the figures given by repbot were different from the savedgames list.  And the fact that the number of saved games came up automatically when someone invited me was a great help.  I know, a lot of saved games doesn't mean that person is a dropper, but it is an indicator.

As far as the vouch/complaint feature goes, all that shows is whether a lot of fibs nicks like or dislike a person.  If it means nothing important to an individual, that person is free to ignore it and those who like an ego boost from having a high rep can bask in the glory.  Lord's idea as an improvement does seem good too.

Just my 1 cents worth :)

Patti

RepBot did intersect two data sets to give slightly different results, but it was still working with the same source data.
