GNUBG - can't run on Mac OSX 10.6

I just learned about GNUBG and would like to run it on my Mac w/ OSX 10.6. I have X11 installed, and I found GNUBG installers for OS 10.4 http://www2.capp-sysware.com/downloads/Tiger/ which I tried. Also I checked http://www.gnubg.org/index.php?itemid=98 and downloaded these 10.5 installers. Also I read the docs but when I enter the specified command into X11, it says 'file not found'.

I don't know if it is a problem with 10.6, or maybe I am doing something wrong (more likely). I am a bit confused about the correct text to type into X11 to launch GNUBG. I've seen different instructions with slightly different text.

Anyone on 10.6 here running GNUBG?

The 10.4 Tiger gnubg won't work on 10.5 or later.

Make sure you have installed the second option (which works on 10.6)  http://http://www.gnubg.org/media/macos/gnubg_all.pkg, otherwise it won't work.


Try this.

1. Open X11.

2. Open the X11 Applications menu (on the top of screen)

3. From the Applications dropdown menu choose "customize" option

4. When the 'customize' window opens, select "add new item"

5. Under "Name" put something like "GnuBg" (this isn't important, anything will do here)

6. Under "Command" type this exactly "/opt/local/bin/gnubg" (without the quotation marks)

7. You may leave the "shortcut" box blank

8. Close the customize window.

9. Now when you open X11 you will see on the drop down Applications menu "GnuBG" (or whatever you named it).  

When you select gnubg from that menu, the program should load. If it doesn't, then its another issue.

I don't bother to open X11 and then open gnubg,  as I've put gnubg in the Dock and just open it from there with one click of the mouse.

Thank you Moonshadow! It is working!  One thing to mention - after following your instructions, GNUBG would not launch when I selected it from X11 as you suggested. I thought all was hopeless  , but then I used your idea and opened the Unix file "gnubg" by dbl clicking it. Eventually GnuBG opened in a terminal window and I played my first game (and I won! ).
