This topic has been discussed now on fibsboard over a long period of time!

From my reading of events, I feel that Patti, has in some respects, acted in the best interest of fibs and its members. If there is serious abuse happening within our community, then it must be addressed and dealt with. I disagree with the view that "Patti would never ban, for example, all UK players!" I am certain that if these events had originated from anywhere else in the world, her reaction would have been exactly the same. I do not believe for a moment that Patti is discriminating against a nation and its people.

But, on the other hand, we play in a community from all walks of life, with different cultures, different sense of humour, different languages etc etc. Majority of us are here for the enjoyment of backgammon. We have all experienced or have witnessed rudeness (& cheating) on occassions on fibs! But then again nobody got hurt or killed as a result, did they?

What you have to decide, is whether the punishment fits the crime in this case!

I have personally enjoyed my matches against players from Italy, and had never found them to be offensive towards me.

I am hoping that maybe the communities vote on this issue, will either help to sway Patti's view or reaffirm her current position, once and for all!

That will be shaken, not, stirred!

The topic of this poll should be "Your Vote Is Irrelevant".

The bottom line is that FIBS is a privately owned and run service.  As such, its administration is not a democracy, and any vote held here will likely have no impact on the situation.   FIBS has been made available to those in the world community that the private owner sees fit to make it available to, and they don't owe us anything.

Unfortunately, on an open system such as FIBS, there is no good way to ban an individual troublemaker.  If you ban his username, he creates a new account, if you ban his IP, he gets a new one.  If you ban his ISP, you are banning an entire group of innocents, and he can just use a different ISP.

As I understand it, these troublemakers were so persistant, the only solution available was to ban a large enough geographical area that they would have to actually leave their house and take a train to another country to continue to cause trouble on FIBS.  This is effective because these troublemakers would likely burst into flames if exposed to direct sunlight.

I would hope the ban could be lifted in time, and that it would serve as a warning that if a group of people become a thorn in Patti's side, she will do what she has to to restore order.

Spot on - Fibs is free and is provided to us all - it is not and should not be a democracy - it's a benign dictatorship (much the most efficient government economically btw - look at Singapore ) .

Patti is , god bless her , (an anarchic agnostic speaking there) in charge . She has her fingers on the trigger and I'm glad - I trust her motive and thus don't need to worry what caused a particular action.

I believe , in fact I 'm sure , that Patti knows that the current solution to what ever the problem is  is unfair .  This is not a perfect world.

Greetings:

What I especially like about Gamm and spielberg's responses (well, in addition to Gamm's line about the cheaters bursting into flames) is their deep appreciation for Patti's work.  Any of you who have ever administered anyting (including things like fibsboard or IRL groups of folks) know what I headache that can be. And, in this case, it's an unpaid headache.  So, I'm of the mind that we trust Patti on this and other similar issues.

I don't care, as long as you're the one that ropes her.

I've never really liked Italians.  Their food is great!  But I am not a big fan of the people.  So I say keep the ban in place.  Well done Patti!
