Hello Socks, we had the discussion already few times. I understand that you gladly versthehts, which goes off in such a way here. But why you cannot accept simply or other Posting in a foreign language? Does FIBS theboard collapse otherwise? I mean: no. Thus my recommendation is to see Postings in strange languages simply times as challenge and weight not each time. You already understand my arguments? I hope, Babelfish am really my friend. Greeting, Hardy

P.S.:  This was automatically translated by http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr. Hope its understandable.

Lol  - no - not really  :D

But on a serious note - it does seem too much to me, to expect everyone who wishes to use this board to write in English.  Webrunner himself has said he doesnt think it is necessary - and has posted in Dutch.  I can see the need for moderation in some cases - but not when the posts are by such characters as Tomawaky and tanitoc.

If there is a dire need (as has been pointed out) for someone who has moderator powers to understand the posts - maybe it is time more were recruited.  Tomawaky perhaps could cover French, and we have plenty of german speakers - to name but two of the many languages.

To argue that FIBS is held in an english speaking country is not valid - when it was hosted in Germany - it was not expected that everyone speak German - ask those who have been here that long.

You suggest they use a translator - yet you accepted the post of moderator - and the accompanying responsibility - maybe you should be the one doing the work?

This board has detailed rules, these do not dictate a language to be used - do they need updating??

FIBS is a global server and this an equally global board - can we not try to include - rather than exclude?

I find this all very amusing. Why is it so important the moderator understand every word of what is posted? If someone wants to yak in Dutch or German or French, especially on something technical in nature, I say go for it.

Of course, if what I've observed in the Fibs shouts is any indication what they might be saying, then it might be better left untranslated!

In Fibs shouts I have observed all manner of perverts, jingoists, racists and cretins spew forth their venomous invective and meaness on all within range. That is where some active 'moderating' needs to be done.  So in the context of the bigger Fibs picture, this little thing about speaking another langauge besides English in a post seems almost trivial, or dare I say humerous?

Its like worrying about a  little gnat buzzing around your nose so much that you fail to see the hordes of cockroaches running around your feet.

If something is said in a post in a 'foreign' langauge that is of earthshattering importance, I'm sure someone will be kind enought to put that into English.

I think I do quite enough work for Fibs by running various tournaments, and on Fibsboard as it is without having to translate every post made in another language as well.  Maybe you disagree with this.  Maybe you would like to take over my various jobs?

That is because Fibs is not moderated.  Fibsboard is and that is why you don't see the filth here.

What I was actually saying - is if it is too much work, get help - there are many very trustworthy Fibsters who can ensure nothing untoward is being posted.
Taking on a responsibility - and then claiming to not have time to do it properly is no way to go about things.
I do as much as I can around a busy work schedule - which you all know.

It seems grossly unfair to me that a non english speaker cannot seek technical help from this resource - unless they can somehow get their request into a language you understand - when there are a mulitude of responsible, sensible people regularly here who speak a variety of languages.

Perhaps rather than teasing - they ought to be offering help?

This intolerance of "foreign" languages really will not do. Clearly a Frenchman posting some technical stuff for another Frenchman is hardly likely to burst out with some intolerant filth or other! Loosen up socksey and save your energies for things that really matter.

Please don't try to tell me a Frenchman can't post anything unappropriate in any context.  I have lived too long to fall for that one.   :P

You misunderstand.  Loose as a goose here.     ;)   Just trying to solve a problem that I don't have time for.  Anyone willing to help, talk to webrunner.

I request posting in English as well as what ever language anyone chooses to post in to make my job easier.  I will continue to do so.  If you refuse, that is your prerogative.   :tears:   The alternative is to send personal messages.  That is also your prerogative.

Spielberg has to be a great choice to help out here - how many languages is that guy fluent in??

Does anyone have any dirt on him we can use to get his 'cooperation' - what am I thinking - there must be loads...  ;)

Any chance of helping out with this Spiel??  Anyone else??

Not to beat a dead horse here, but I'd like to point out somethings,

1) English is the first language of the internet after binary.

2) Fibs is the first dedicated backgammon server on the internet. (all help and info is in english)

3) Maybe the Fibsboard needs a forum for other languages section mod by other language speakers.  This is just an idea that might meet the needs of fellow non english speaking backgammon players.

Please note the poster refuses any responsibility for hurt feelings resulting in this exercise of freedom of speech

1 - Sure, but I dont speak binary - yet I can use the internet....

2 - Actually it isnt now - much work has been done to get this into as many other languages as possible.  Click on the flags at the top of www.fibs.com - and the text is translated into a wide variety of languages. :D

3 - Separate forums for separate languages is a great idea - but I think it is a bit unwieldy - for instance - we need a sub forum javafibs (for questions about javafibs) do we then need to break that down into as many other cataegories as there are languages???

The best way is to increase the number of moderators to include those who can check non english posts and ensure the high standards of fibsboard are met.

and lastly...Hurt feelings are inevitable here  ;)

Fibsboard is not operated by an English owner, webrunner, but Fibs is, therefore, I feel the #1 language of Fibsboard should be English.

Secondly, webrunner has appointed me moderator, and as moderator, if I do not understand the language posted here, I cannot do my job. I have stated this many times previously here. Perhaps you missed it before.

This is a simplistic emotional argument based on the false premise that the moderator has to understand every single post in order to be doing their job.

Effective leaders know when to be flexible and when not to be, even making an exception to established rules when in their judgement the greater good of all is served.

Let's see some flexiblility! We've got enough politicians that pass the buck already.

This instance of posting in other langauges is an easy call:  let it be.

Why?

1. There have been very, very few postings in a langauge other than English.

2. The fear of perhaps uncensored "filth" being posted on the board in another langauge is a straw man argument--I haven't seen those who posted in a foreign langauge here spewing filth in the Fibs shouts, so why would they do so on this board?

3. I'm sure if something vile were posted in a foreign langauge, someone would notify in English the moderator.

The bottom line is that even though the moderator doesn't undestand every single word posted here doesn't mean they aren't doing their job.

Sorry, socksey, but you will have to come up with something a little more convincing

This is a good case of that song makes a lot of sense . . . . speaking words of wisdom. . . . . let it be.

webrunner

I thing we have a new language called Babbelfish ;)

On the language thing... i can recognize foul language in a lot of languages. And yes, i hope that other visitors warn me and/or socksey when they see something bad on the forum.

The problem is though: how can we verify that a reported post is indeed not suitable for this forum?

But then again.. Fibs was, is and always will be an international place, and since this forum is a spin-off of Fibs, this will be too.
