QuoteShouts are being disabled for a bit. Let's see if people can learn to be respectful.

I can't say I am overly optimistic about some old dogs learning new tricks...but given how long so many of us have been hoping to clean up shouts..it will be nice to see if this has the desired effect.

I am just curious as to how long 'a bit' is - given we have been reading..

QuoteFIBS will be moving sometime in the next few weeks.

since Christmas - and I dont think it has yet...

I shall cross my fingers and hope for a new and improved fibs

Can MissManners and Tourneybot still shout?

I'm curious to see how it will be determined if people have learned to be respectful if everyone is silent for this undetermined bit. I think x should be appointed to make this determination.

The solution is simple; I propose the creation of RespectBot. Certain shouted words would send RespectBot into action to impose some yet to be determined punishment on the offender.

Anyway, I have to run now, I'll talk to you in about 4 bits.

I don't see what the big deal is.  Let people shout, let them speak.  who cares?  why count the number the shouts anyway?  i think some people have lost their minds!

My hovercraft is full of eels.

(Tried to shout that last night, but shouts were down.  So I'll have to post inane non-sequiters here)

Excellent idea, NIH!  I wonder if Patti will like it.   :)

On another note, I have removed some posts on this thread that I determined were not productive to the clean-up Patti proposes for Fibs.  I don't think the battle that was raging on Fibs should be carried over to Fibsboard as well.  So. please restrain yourselves, guys.  Mama bear is watching and she's not happy.

I'm not aware of any Patti-proposed cleanup, my suggestion would be that she disable shouts permanently. That solves the problem once and for all. Everyone will be, if not respectful, silent.

Is this issue new?  I had the impression that the flame war had been going on for a decade or so.  Any idea what precipitated this move?

BTW, I was watching shouts when the final shouts were shouted - I saw Patti musing about turning them off, then they just stopped.

Can't say I miss them, but the lack of a common communication space on FIBS itself will probably cause more traffic on this board.  For better or worse (c:

It isn't really a question of what is shouted is it? I mean we all hear and most of us use swear words, surely that isn't a problem, but comments deliberately designed to offend and hurt should be censored. That isn't of course as easy as programming a bot to excise references to the Far King or Our Soul, in fact it is probably impossible! What we have to do is censor ourselves. I'm not entirely innocent in the game of winding up one of my enemies, but it shouldn't go on. The number of people who do it is very small in proportion to the number of fibsters, so perhaps the permanent nuking of six or seven serial offenders would do the trick.

vegasvic

Are you volunteering to be head of the line  Dorbel ?

SILENCE IS GOLDEN !!!

dorbel

Oh I'm sorry, I thought that this was a discussion! Had I realised that it was merely a continuation of interpersonal abuse by other channels, I would have posted something different.

No abuse intended , i thought since you admit to adding to the problem and have offered 5 or 6 heads
are you among them ?

And what about comments covertly designed to offend and hurt?

NIHILIST

I think Vic has a perfectly valid point. Dorbel, you have taken a big first step with your candid admission. You'd set a great example for the rest of us if you volunteered to be banned.

I didn't personalise this debate. Those that have no doubt have their own reasons for doing so.

Covert or overt is immaterial, deliberately was the word that I used and it is the intent that constitutes the offence. We all know that it should stop, but if it doesn't when the ban is lifted, nobody can complain if they get the boot.

vegasvic

dorbel its ok covert or overt , i overtly still love you !!

I think we're drifting off topic here, the main thing is, has anyone gotten respectful yet ?

with all respect to all of you...

...first, I think it is absolutely neccessary to be friendly on a place like fibs..
...secondly, I think there should be no restrictions like that on the internet...
