Interesting links
« on: November 14, 2006, 07:10:41 AM »
I just found that on Hardy's Backgammon Pages and want to share it with fibsboarders if you missed this link, like me, until now.

This game they call todas tablas (all tables)

There is another game that they call todas tablas because it is set up spread out through all the four tables of the board.

And in the two tables that are across from one another on the same side of the bar, one the first they place five pieces of one color on the six-point. And of that same [color] they place two on the one-point of the other table that is across from it on the same side of the bar, and in that same table [the other color] also puts his pieces opposite it [the other color] as we have said for this. And in the other two tables that are across the bar from these, on the one-points they put five pieces of the color that placed the other five on the sixth point. And on the five-points they put three pieces in each of these colors.

And it is played like this: the one to roll first will play whichever side he wishes bringing the two pieces from the one-point towards the six-point where he has five pieces. But if some pieces are taken, they are to be returned to the table where the two pieces are on the one-point. And from there they are to bring them to the table where the five pieces are on the six-point and from there to bear them off.

And this game is played with two dice.

This image is from the Libro de los juegos.

The Libro de los Juegos, ("Book of games"), or Libro de acedrex, dados e tablas, ("Book of chess, dice and tables") was commissioned by Alfonso X, king of León and Castile, during the 13th century and completed in 1283.

The book describes the rules for a number of games in the tables family. One notable entry is todas tablas, which has an identical starting position to modern backgammon and follows the same rules for movement and bearoff. => The translation of the spanish text

Thanks Hardy to bring me to this page  :applaus:

Wow, that is interesting.  We are curious as to how the starting position came about, does it have a  mathematical basis, or is it a position arrived at by trial and error.  Does anyone already know the answer to this question?

Hi Franck, you are a very attentive visitor of my website. I appreciate it

Diane, I must admit I haven't read the whole text yet. I can't say yet, whether the book describes, how the starting position was defined. Will take some days yet, as they tried to keep the english translation close to the original spanish text. So it's non-modern English, but a bit old fashioned. Doesn't make it easy for me to understand.

I found another old picture of a backgammon board, it's a detail of a 1562 drawing by Pieter Bruegel the Elder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Triumph_of_Death. Look in the lower right corner.

Hi Webby,

please explain "extra" link  :iknix:

There is a link to FIBS Board in my link section at http://www.hardyhuebener.de/engl/links_bg.html#bg-server, and also at the (very tiny) FIBS section of my website: http://www.hardyhuebener.de/engl/online_spielen_fibs.html

You want MORE links???   :help:

Check this one out:
http://www.grandeforum.com/detail/link-109.html

fibsboard: "The biggest free backgammon community in the world."
Kept free with sufficient hit counts and links such as this one.

Also, someone instructed NMBA that the link for "The First Internet Backgammon Server" was fibsboard.com.
http://northernmichiganbg.spaces.live.com/Lists/cns!AEA04C7C6BD3884B!128/
Tricky, but every bit helps!

Lots of free link list pages exist to help bump your count up such as the following.
I would have added fibsboard to these, but someone beat me to it:
http://backgammon.linknet.be/index.php?page=wordmatches&heading_id=3425
http://backgammon.info-pagina.com/

This one lists fibsboard as an "online magazine":
http://backgammon.goedbegin.be/

I'm not sure what this one is about. Something to do with affiliate marketing:

That is an old affilliate-network i used to work with on sprintweb.nl and a dutch forum. I have tried a few banners with them on fibsboard but they weren't relevant.

But what is your point exactly Burper, that you found the site: functionality on Google and Yahoo?  :thumbsup2:

Als, the best place to post backgammon related links on this website is here: http://www.fibsboard.com/index.php?action=links;sa=addlink3  ;)

Oftentimes old links which are now "dead" may be visited using http://www.archive.org/index.php- a time machine for the web at which, unusually, a fibster actually "works".
