F.I.B.S. general support / About the new "Dog" bots
Last post by ah_clem - April 12, 2021, 04:32:13 PM
Anybody know anything about the recent influx of bots with Dog in the name?  MatchDog, DoubleDog, SnoopDog, StupidDog, BeachDog, etc?

Are they all the same like the Gammonbots or are they different like Gammonbot is different than Blunderbot?

Other Tournaments / Re: Tourney Of Champions Tourn...
Last post by pipcat - March 18, 2021, 10:03:03 AM
I didn't find many information about played TOC tourneys, and the results in fibs.challonge.com are usually incomplete with this tournament, so I've done a simple web page that compiles the historical results of the tournament:

https://pip.cat/fibs/toc.php

If someone have more information about some missing months, please contact me so we can complete it.

Using backgammon software / LeptonBackgammon - FIBS client...
Last post by Nortally - February 18, 2021, 04:34:55 AM
Hey Fibsters,

I've been more of a lurker than a community member, but I've been playing for years (fond memories of vanished jokebot).

Long story short, I've spent the pandemic finishing a long-abandoned MA program by writing an Android client for FIBS. It's still beta software but it works. Android 8 or better recommended. I mostly play on a tablet, but it runs on my Moto x4 just fine.

Enjoy!

Hi Stog. Yes, as indicated in my initial post, I am aware that GNUBG ad GBBLITZ both work well with macOS X; and both are getting excellent reviews.

However, neither one of them is on the App Store. Do you know why? One would think that with apps that strong and with such good reputation, the developer would want to make their software available on the App Store, thus giving prospective buyers a peace of mind, knowing that the app has been vetted by Apple/Microsoft (as the case may be.)
The answer for GnuBG is simple: Their license GPL isn't compatible with the Appstore (IIRC)

The answer for BGBlitz is not that simple:  If you use the toolchain from Apple it is easy to go to the app store. But BGBlitz doesn't use that toolchain(for good reasons) and then it starts to get difficult. I would have simply too much work, just to be present in the App Store. Will BGBlitz be visible there? Don't know, but at least I would to have deal with dozens of "what a crap, get's the dice it wants stuff".  BTW before Catalina you had to sign the software, so at least you know who provided the program. Since Catalina you have to notarise the app so Apple checked the app before, so you gain no security by using the AppStore. Again difficult if you don't use Apples tool chain (I'm currently working on that. Quite some work without a benefit for the functionality). Currently you need a workaround to install BGBlitz on Catalina and BigSur because the official solution from Apple doesn't work :(

At the end of the day I do BGBlitz for my personal enjoyment and it is far more fun adding missing functionality than investing time for an Appstore, website, advertising etc. (but don't misunderstand: if you ask for support you'll be astonished how good it is)

We have received word that Penelope (manxcat) passed away after a battle with cancer.

She sometimes had a rough exterior to some, but many of us knew her long enough to get past that to find a person that was kind and considerate.(thx Tom for letting us know and your obit and as you also said

"She will be missed and she did add a uniqueness to the FIBS community".

F.I.B.S. general support / Can't access fibs.com
Last post by mkpalumbo - November 29, 2020, 12:09:23 AM
Hi,

I've been playing on Fibs.com for a year or two, and recently I had some connections issues, and now I can't connect from my home. I can't loadd fibs.com in a browser, and I can't ping the domain. But I can load it up on my phone using cellular. Can anyone suggest a reason why this would suddenly be the case? Do the server admins block someone from the whole domain by their Router IP, and if so, why would that have occurred?

Thanks

Mike
