Title: is Fibs down for everyone?
Post by: maman_Eve on January 16, 2005, 05:03:26 AM
I cannot log on either with Mac Fibs or Java Fibs. Is anyone else having similar issues? :tears:

There was a fibs quake and restart on 14th of January at about 12:00 UTC. After fibs came up again, it had two IP adresses. Furthermore, www.fibs.com seems to have changed IP adress as well and is now co-hosted on the same virtual server as http://www.gammonline.com/ (http://www.gammonline.com/). A change in DNS takes time to propagate over the net, so time should fix the issues.

Meanwhile, you can try to use the new numerical adresses for playing and surfing. That would be:

198.144.203.150 or 67.122.198.180 for fibs game server at port 4321
http://67.122.198.180/ (http://67.122.198.180/) for fibs web sever

If www.fibs.com or the numerical equivalent do show the gammononline homepage rather than fibs, try cleaning your browser cache or hold the shift key when you submit the adress (works for IE, Mozilla and Firefox, others probably too). Gammononline seems to be the default virtual server, so the numerical address most likely will show that one rather than fibs.com's content.

How long it takes before everything is back to normal depends on your ISP's cache update policy and is outside the control of your OS. You need to be patient here, or if you are technically inclined can work around by manually setting a new DNS server. The authoritive (SOA) DNS servers for fibs are 198.144.203.150 and 67.122.198.180. If you connect using a dial up, try using another ISP because some ISP are affected and some are not.

P.S. I wonder why such an important change was not announced in the MOTD?

Thank you inim.  The first numerical IP address worked for me, but the second one didn't.
We appreciate it.

In newsgroup rec.games.backgammon, there's an answer from Patti:

QuoteThere's no new IP and no change to DNS.

Apparently fibs.com rebooted itself.  I'm out of town until
tomorrow, but it seems to have come back up on its own.
