Title: Joe Tamargo
Post by: Mort on August 30, 2004, 01:14:32 AM
It came to my attention from socksey, that fellow fibster Joe Tamargo has just suffered serious health conditions. Here is the link that will explain all that is known to this point.

http://www.avlerchess.com/chess-misc/Joe_T...Ill_179731.html (http://www.avlerchess.com/chess-misc/Joe_Tamargo_is_Seriously_Ill_179731.html)

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Joe a healthy recovery and a speedy return to Fibs.

Best Wishes Joe
Regards,  Mort

It is both ironic and sad that you don't really know enough about someone until they are in serious trouble or dead.  I hope Joe makes it back so that some of us new comers can know him a little bit better.

I wish you peace and health Joe.

Joe, i think we played once and i never really knew who you where.
It is PW says.. reading this message makes me realize once more what special place Fibs is. You don't really know anything about the people you play. I hope Fibsboard  adds a little more humanity and sense of community to Fibs.

I wish you the best of health and a quick recovery from this fight you are fighting now.

Keep your chin up, i hope to see you again here soon!    :giveflower:

Thanks Mort for pointing this out.

Joe has done me the honor of several matches over the many years of FIBS history.

Best wishes to you Joe! Keep plugging.

This sort of thing puts all the fibs bickering in perspective, don't it?

Good ol'Joe is a good guy, living in NYC
He lost a leg which is a terrible thing :(
I called him and left a message on his machine wishing him well on behalf of all fibsters
If you care to call him and leave your own message, his number is XXXXXXXXXXXX
Good luck to y'all

comment by the administrator: please don't post emailadresses and telephone numbers, on the board since this is a public place. Especially numbers from other people. If you want Jo's number you can mail to Bladerunner through his  profile page (http://www.fibsboard.com/index.php?showuser=1530).
Or of course you can email Joe himself (http://www.fibsboard.com/index.php?showuser=1301).

Has anybody got any new news about Joe?  I called up the hospital as soon as I read the post here and they had no information.  I called his home phone and left a message, and sent an email.  Nothing.  How's Joe doing?

By they way, vote for Joe for the fibsie!

I've only ever played Joe once , several years ago , yet I still remember it. His intellect and humour shone through (tho' it's only now I've realised his grandmaster plus status  in the world of games)

I'm trying to chase up any news (from the chess world) and will post it here if and when I get some.

I can't say "get well"  as having had a leg amputated he's unlikely to feel well for some time yet - I can hope that he gets through this and resurfaces to Fibs and Battery Park (south west Manhattan) soon - he'll be an even more terrifying chess hustler in a wheelchair.

don, Bladerunner did these same things long ago without success.  He also called some other hospitals and found nothing.

I sent an email to the guy who wrote the article and have, so far, had no response.  I don't know of anyone, yet, who has any info on Joe's condition.  Hope you learn something, spielberg!

According to an emal I just received:

"Joe is in the Flushing Manor Nursing Home on Parsons Blvd. Near Northern Blvd. in Queens. He is now OK, except that his leg has been chopped off."

If any New Yorkers check this out, please send my best to Joe.

Hurray!  I just talked to Joe (11AM NY time).

Joe sounds fine, if a bit cranky, so we know it's Joe!  He says his condition was severe gout and a blood clot, leading to the loss of his leg,  "Terribly absent minded of me to lose the thing", but after lying on the floor of his place for a couple of days, he woke up in the hospital and it was gone.

His location for the next six months or so is:

Flushing Manor Nursing Home
35-15 Parsons Blvd, Flushing, New York 11354
718-961-3500

Joe says they won't let him have a computer.  He says he's actually making money since he has no expenses.  He doesn't have his address book, which he's trying to get from his landlord.  I suggested there might be some New York FIBsters who could visit and even run an errand, he loves the idea.  He was surprised to hear from me, and would like to hear from others.

So the news is fairly good.

Thanks so much, don!  Vic says he will call Joe this afternoon.  I'll give him a call in a couple of days.  I think we should keep this up until he gets home again.
