Well I played 100 games and it seems I am settled at a rating of 1400.
I am reading "Backgammon for Dummies" so maybe that will help.
I have no idea how to figure out dice probabilities...haven't got to that chapter yet.
And...Backgammon and alcohol go hand in hand so that's not the problem. :)
Downloading GNUBG and getting help from its 'tutor' is a good option.

100 games isn't anywhere near enough to be 'settled' ;)
My advice to learn if you are really new to this..go to a club, play with people in a tournament [limit the amount you spend though ;) ]
The first top tips will get you learning, then you can start to build in more complex ideas, and get gnu to analyse matches you have played.
The thing about getting gnu now, is that the output takes some understanding...and you may be able to see coloured moves/cubes are bad, but the numbers don't intuitively tell you why.
Talking to people will help you with first ideas and the most important things to know. Knowing even those will start to improve your play.
You can even invite me to a match if you see me, and I will chat through what I know to get you going ;)
Also - please come and get involved in the daily fibsboard match - see what people are voting for - and if the moves getting votes wouldn't be your choice, and you don't know why - ASK. that is why we are running those matches - to help people learn.

I started playing at a club....New England BG club, near me once a month.
Also I looked up GNU and the links don't take me to a download....they take me to some "page headers" page and it is nothing.
Google it and see for yourself. Maybe I am doing something wrong? it must be me, it always is.
