Sexual Harassment on FIBS

I just experienced a situation on FIBS, shouts were quiet, when a female friend from another country shouted a "hi" to me and I responded.  Immediately, crude shouts came from another FIBSter.  My friend asked the jerk to be polite, to no avail.  This would have been the end of it if people like diane, Kari_Grandi and BSinclair had not gotten into the act.

Because of the excellent reputations of these named FIBSters, and their apparant ignorance of a serious problem, I simply want to say that sexual harassment of FIBSters goes beyond FIBS in some cases.  It is possible that they have a credibility problem with me, or else they personally enjoy the sexual innuendo of FIBS shouts.

Not all do.

I know of women who have been anonymously spammed via international links, and a case where a FIBS user used the USENET news to post in her name via an anonymous link.  This is no joke.  I will not repeat the disgusting things that have been said and done by users that diane, Kari_Grandi, BSinclair and such think is an amusing joke.

I do not consider the sexual harassment of women to be a joke.

If these incidents were simply confined to FIBS, it would be voluntary and I'd simply be griping about users being driven away.  It's not.

The responsible users of FIBS need to, as a group, refuse to tolerate harassment of anyone who is not an active participant.  I may not like what goes down in shouts, but I suggest that responsible users make some kind of effort to stop the harassment of non-participants.  It can lead to, at best, less participation on FIBS -- at worst criminal and threatening behavior.

At least I hope that's the worst.

I agree Shades, and i have fought about this verbal abuse many times as you can read on this forum (snakepit anyone?). In fact, similar things as you described really happened, several times even.

I have to admit that Don has lost his credibility for me (and i think for most fibsters) so i am prolly not being completely honest to him in my reaction. I don't take him seriously anymore after all that has happened here on this forum with Don.

I once played a match with him, and at first he seemed friendly enough, except for the fact that he seemed obsessed with finding out my gender. Once he knew I was female, he proceeded to make the point that women were inferior backgammon players over and over. Now, I realize that psychology is part of this game, but I thought this was over the top. I would not bother whining about this here, except for the fact that it is don bringing up sexual harassment. I have perma-gagged don and will never play him again. Its' sad that he is given a voice here on fibsboard.

We have no control of Fibs.  Therefore, to discuss that here, we might as well joke about it.  Laughing is always better than crying over something we have no control.  

The thing we do have control of is the "gag" feature, a Fibs command, and this works in shouts for some clients, JavaFibs for one.  So use the "gag" feature, and urge others to use it if anyone offends them.   :angry:  

fcomm, you can gag within a game and still finish the match, too.

Quite right, Shades!  We should never assume anyone is lying just because we may feel prejudice towards that person for whatever reason.  All of us have much to contribute.  I should hope we never stop listening.

What is important is not who started the topic, but what the topic is.  If webby thinks because I started a topic it is bad, he should either delete or lock it, or follow his own advice and ignore it.  We see how consistent he is when he chooses option three, insults.

While we're at it, how about an explanation of fcomm, webby?  That post is complete fiction, obviously meant as nothing but a flame.  Why delete the account quietly with no comment?  If you saw fit to delete the account, it might help the credibility of this thread to point it out and explain why.  You've never hesitated to explain why you've taken action about things I've written.

I don't have any secrets, it is all out in the open.
