The nominations for the June 2004 Fibsie award are now open. The Fibsie award is given to the individual or group for outstanding contributions to the fibs community. An individual or group may only receive the Fibsie once, so it is actually like a fibs community hall of fame. Past recipients include:

1. April 2004: marvin
2. May 2004: Kit and Sally Woolsey

Post your nomination and justification in this thread. You may not nominate more than once, but your nomination may be for a group rather than an individual. You may not nominate yourself. Voting will begin on the 15th of June, or as soon as the nominations are full (10). Watch this space.

I would like to nominate webrunner, who hosts fibsboard.com which is the focal point for all fibs community discussions. Well, at least the serious ones. fibs is the primary focal point of fibs discussions of course ;)

webrunner has provided fibsboard.com as an outgrowth of the original improveFibs site. fibsboard.com provides these forums, without which we would not have a fibsie award! :) fibsboard.com also hosts TourneyBot and several bg playing bots which are enjoyed by many. It also supports web sites for TourneyBot, RepBot, ChouetteBot etc... as well as the best fibs.com health indicator (which should be added to the bottom of the fibs.com website I might add).

Thank you webrunner!

alef

  for webrunner.

I'll nominate gnubg, which includes Gary Wong and everyone else who has ever worked on the impressive bot. The bots are are our teachers, ever present opponents and silent punching bags (well except for bonehead who is an evil half-brother of gnubg).

Biggles

I again nominate Fergy for his outstanding contribution to FIBS, the best client ever created: MacFIBS.

Biggles
(The most popular Fibsters)
Winner of the inaugural Master League Tournament and countless other league and mini-tournaments......

jasonj

I nominate TomServo for his excellence in notifying people around the world of his need to pee. In a "virtual" world, it's a breath of fresh air to know that people need to perform such "real" bodily functions. God bless TomServo, wherever he may pee.... er... be.

:tears:

webrunner

I nominate Alef (again :) for starting the Improve Fibs Yahoo group and maintaining the fibs website, the picture website, the repbot website , the fibs archive, the postcard tournament, etc. etc.
The list goes on and on...

Tomawaky

I nominate socksey cause I am always happy to see her connected when I enter Fibs arena  :D
Tomawaky "I feel good da da da da da da da.........i knew that i would now........."

Shuggie

I nominate my sister.  After shattering defeats, being subjected to terrible dice or playing Vic she is just the tonic many Fibsters need.  One needs to look no further than mookie and Biggles for proof.

Her service to the FIBS community is invaluable.
Don't hate me because I'm beautifull, just love me in that special way

magic_one

I nominate Daniel (Dan) Shirley, a.k.a. Birdman.
He was one of the inaugural registered players on FIBS.
He was there to help all newbies.
He was not only logged on to play, but also to help, during FIBS formative years.
All of the current old timers were newbies at one time, and Birdman was there to help out.
His pleasant nature, his friendliness, and his competitiveness are over deserving of this memorial honor.
At the time of his death, he was one of the highest experienced players.  For example,
On September 30, 1993, he was the second most experienced player.  See http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=28g1v...e&output=gplain
On March 30, 1994, he was the second most experienced player.  See http://www.netadelica.com/bg/oldrats.html
On July 2, 1995, he was the third most experienced player (#1 was a bot).  See http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~radev/backgam...rt/J-1995-07-01
On July 30, 1996, he was the fourth most experienced player ( #1 was a bot).  See http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~radev/backgam...rt/J-1996-07-29
He passed away December 25, 1996, aged 41.

I nominate George Walker Bush, current president of the United States of America for June. I think the all the work he has done with Homeland Security has Strengthened the Internet and therefore indirectly fibs.

burper

I'll add a late rule that states that the nomination must be for a nickname that either currently exists, or that most people would remember. Therefore, Birdman is ok, but shugs sister and GWB are out, unless you can cite their current nicknames.

I have been having some reservations about the Fibsie awards as I think some navel gazing is ok but can get tiring after a while. However I'm quite moved by magic_one's story of Birdman and that alone makes this very worthwhile. If unappreciated people are brought to light then that's great but if it's just the list of us usual FIBS addicts and some joke entries then I'd question its value.

I guess what I'm asking is how many months should this run? Think there needs to be a limit to keep it vaguely sensible. Can you imagine after two years then TomServo might actually win! Still think of that guy every time someone says "I need to pee"

BTW, why shouldn't TomServo win?  Who are you to decide who is or is not worthy of someone else's nomination or vote?

We should have self-righteousness awards.

Kari_Grandi

I'll nominate once again Tomawaky, who started leagues and tournaments about 3 years ago with FLG http://fibsleagammon.free.fr/ . IMO, that site gave a go to tourneybot.

PortWine

I would like to nominate burper for his repbot creation.  Although people have many different levels of opinion about its effectiveness, it does at least create a framework in which a level of honesty and fair play is rewarded on fibs.  Warts and all repbot is still more efficient than relying on every cry of "X is a dropper!"

Mookie

Following the witty logic of my friend JasonJ, I would like to nominate CSG for the fibsie award.  If reminding us of bodily functions is a valuable trait, then surely act #2 is more worthy than act #1.

Clearly, if fibs is a family (and not a snake pit), it is csg who wears the poopy pants.

Yours,

Mookie

p.s. would someone please suggest an avatar for me.

I think a pair of high-heeled shoes with runny cheese oozing out of the toes would be appropriate. Either that or a left wing crudely hacked from a pigeon.
