Like most fibsters I've had the pleasure to chat to over the years I log onto fibs to escape the real world and roll the die in a cyber playground. I realised recently (ironically in the face of a significant amount of petty negativity posted on this otherwise fantastic site) just how much pleasure this has given me, for free, week in week out, since about 1998. I also realised how many nice people I've met, real people who are living their real lives somewhere around the globe ! I'm convinced that it is these people and not the odd 6-6 that gives fibs it's long lasting appeal and provides me with such a wonderful sense of getting away from it all. Now i know I'm not alone in this view and felt here was an opportunity to allow anyone who was feeling good, or had a good news story, a joke or a thankyou, to share it with the entire fibs community !  This is what i hope will become of this strand .....

The hardest thing about starting was trying to chose 1 story or person out of the countless number of good things that have occured to me on fibs over the years. I hope to get to them all in time ! For now though i will start with the most recent.

A few days ago i accepted an invite from a player i had never played against before but whose name sounded familiar for some reason. He was called ronen. After the usual greetings and first few moves he thanked me for my support. It took a few minutes for me to realise he was referring to a post he had made on fibsboard, regarding droppers, and in particular the reply i posted to him.

I said yw, np and he asked me where i lived. He had lived in Australia also some years ago , loved it, but had to return home because....well he said he just had to, it was his home. I asked where he lived and he replied "in the battlefield of the middle-east".  Ronen was in Israel and heard explosions on a semi-regular basis. Ronen also played on fibs to "escape" and was as polite and friendly as they come.  He gave me a sense of just how lucky i am to live where my home is and high-lighted  how petty and worthless cyber attacks are.  Instead you have the equally free option of brightening up someones day from the other side of the world !

So here i would like to say THANKYOU RONEN for keeping it all in perspective and may you stay safe for many, many years of chilling out on Fibs. ;)

Thanks for the strand Eddie.
A few weeks ago, I was online playing with someone I didn't know very well named shahgammon. I was in Boston, and he was in Singapore. I always enjoy playing people from far away places.
Anyway, during the match, I got up for coffee and noticed a coyote in my backyard. This is uncommon for our area. I wanted to take a pic, but didn't want to leave shahgammon waiting, so I got my coffee and returned to the match and chatted about it.
He *demanded* that I take a picture right away and send it to him! :) So I did. Next thing you know, he was sending me pictures taken off his balcony in Malaysia. It was pretty cool to play someone and get a real sense of each others surroundings.
It took forever to finish the match, but we had a great time.
:thumbsup2:

<-- finally made to "Advanced"

And I am still waiting to see piccies of coyotes in the back yard!! Please please post em!! (i can trade for a picture of - erm let me see - erm sarf london pidgeons - erm no - well i dont know - anything youd like to see a picture of that i consider humdrum?? - and dont even go there.........  :P  )

Yup - it is that kind of thing that makes this such a great place - something everyday to one person is a new experience to another - and it changes your own perspective!!

And i am getting to (slowly) erode that myth that it always rains in london!! - Arent I ???

I never payed much attention to world news - beyond the big stuff - but now i am much more interested - cos i know it affects a freind of mine somewhere!  I also very much appreciate the personal news stories i get here - much more valid than what our papers and TV decide to spoon feed us!

It is indeed these things that must keep me here - cos it sure aint the dice!! :D

Memory is a funny thing. People have been talking about seeing a coyote recently, so I had it in my mind that that's what I saw. It was a fox in fact. The thing that struck me, was how it was just lounging around like my house cat!

Certainly no deer or coyotes here, but we do get urban foxes occasionally and the Eurostar regularly...
