New FIBS client application

Hello all,

I've been playing on FIBS for about a year now, I think and I've found most of the client programs that I've used to be clunky and lacking in features (or worse).  That being said, I'm entertaining the notion of writing a new FIBS client.

Now, I'd love for it to be platform independent (since Linux *really* lacks a good - and non-Java - FIBS client), so I'm thinking I'll write it in Python or C#.

I'm planning to write all of the connection libraries, etc. by hand from scratch.  I'm also hoping it'll be modular enough so that other client programs (or bots, perhaps) could use the same library.

Any programmers out there who want to help out?  Obviously, the more quality coders, the faster the ball gets rolling!

Feedbeck welcome/appreciated

always interesting to have a new client.
Curious about to know What do you think you can improve compare to the javafibs2001 software ?

Why don't you help to improve the ones we already have?

May be, because it's not possible.

For instance: Peter Nevalainen (the author of JavaFibs) does not give the Java Code away. It's not Open Source.

Same situation with my bot. My code (Python) isn't Open Source.

Well, my program would definitely be open source, probably hosted on sf.net or on my own server.

As far as improving on the java client (which is really the only one I'd consider hacking on) - like amarganth already pointed out - I can't get to the source code.

Anyway, I'll start hacking out some prototype stuff in python (or maybe common lisp) for the low-level connection libraries and see how it goes.  The fun part will be the GUI...

Ok, I've decided that the project will be written in Python using a GTK gui.

I've got a couple of people interested in helping out already, so that's a good sign!

Now, I need to come up with a name for the client so I can request a sf project...

Any suggestions?

Don't say PyFibs, I've already ruled that out as uninspired/boring :)

(special thanks to Strike on irc.oftc.net for coming up with the super cool name)

The project application has been submitted to sf.net, so now I'm just waitng for the approval.  Once that happens, all project-related discussion will be moved to the project mailing lists.

Anybody else who'd like to participate, email me at bk@inkedmn.com
