Webrunner is currently creating a new and better version of the Fibsboard website.  The features that are not working now, i.e., rules, email, will be functional as well as hopefully eliminating the spam we have been experiencing.  He forecasts this project will be complete in one month.

Kudos to webbie for all the work and time he has devoted to all of us maintaining this website!

I was aware of this impending upgrade - and had got to wondering what will happen at the switch over?  Will the existing material on this board stay here for reference - and we start again on a new one - or is the material porting across to the new version and carry on as if nothing had happened (but for the improvements of course)?

And are ya gonna do this every time I get just a little short of 1000 posts

What happens when one gets to a thousand posts? Do you get a prize?

I am still working on the new version.
It will take a bit longer than expected, partially because i haven't had enough time to work on fibsboard lately.

I have been thinking about adding new features to Fibsboard. Is there any thing that you guys might some up with?

Here are some possibilities, pick one (or a few) or suggest your own ideas:
- a backgammon reference database / wiki maintained by all members
- personal weblogs
- personal photo gallery (for Vic maybe?)
- Bracket maker
- Tournament pages
- software download pages (for the newest fibsclients)
- recieved articles (backgammon related)
- chatroom  ;)
- backgammon link directory

Also i am curious about what you think is most important for this site: speed, more features, better design or ease of use?

Oh and...
Of course i will try my best to transfer all information and pictures into the new forum.
So far i have tried converting it to 2 different systems wich all went well, with only a few bumps on the road.

Ease of use - hands down - so far this is the easiest to use forum I have come across - with a nice display so info is visually impactive.  Chat room sounds good - as well as the more serious stuff - and of course proper moderation to stop all the spamming is critical  :D . Oh and I like that everything will carry over - we have a lot of useful stuff here - I refer to it a lot - it would be a shame to lose that.

erm didnt you say...
QuoteAlso i am curious about what you think is most important for this site: speed, more features, better design or ease of use?

My reply was - that ease of use is more important to me - and from the difficulties a lot of fibsters seeem to have with software (we are mostly not programmers)...I think that might be more widespread.

I am sure you will be working on spam controls - but you didnt mention them - and the spamming here is currently ridiculous.

Other than that - I am not a programmer - as you know - and I have mentioned before, I am not to good at coming up with stuff, because I simply dont know what is available or possible - but I have been lead to believe any feedback is better than none.

I must admit to being a little afraid of the change (as well as looking forward to it of course) - I found BGWorld less visually easy than this one, which is why I didnt spend so much time there. I hope the next version of fibsboard can retain that quality we have here.

I didn't mean to critisize you, i actually value your opinion a lot :)

I will actually look at usability as one of the main plusses of a system, but also speed and stability.

Spamming is ridiculous everywhere. Spamfighting can only be done by a team of moderators that are very quick in their respons and actions. I have proven this on another community we own.

So maybe i should take on more moderators ;)

No, shut it down altogether.

That wouldnt be so bad - if you could reintroduce the feature whereby you grant people the ability to post, after checking they actually use fibs - hence cutting down on the spamming and coming a lot closer to keeping fibsboard a means for fibsters to communicate - as opposed to some random dating or whatever board (there is enough room to do that on fibs itself  ;) ).

Are you looking for volunteers to act as moderators - or approaching people you think suitable?

Checking each member is too much work for me and it is not user-friendly. If there was a programmer that could create a script that checks the member on sign-up then it would be possible.

Also i have to upgrade the script to a newer version or different forum since this is outdated.

Burper, being as constructive as usual i see. I wish you would be a little bit more positive for a change. I am currently spending a lot of time on fibsboard, working and testing every day for the last two weeks. All i get is this crap from you. Why not help us out a bit in stead of whining about others all the time?

I am still thinking about moderators, but people can always offer to help out by sending me a personal message.

I'll script it for you. PHP I assume, or does it matter?
What are your interface requirements? I.e. if its' a bash script, it could take argument 1 as the username to be checked, and return true if it meets configurable parameters or false if not.
Configurable parameters are just what, experience? Also an account name to login with.

Hear Hear, that would be cool Burper.
Are you just pulling my leg or is this a genuine offer?

In case it is:
I would create a user called fibsboard, that logs in and approves only if the first and the second or the third conditions are valid:
1. The user must exist on Fibs

2. The IP address on Fibs matches the one stored in the fibsboard database
3. The email address used on fibsboard is the same as the email address stated in Fibs.

I know i have used experience before as a threshold but really that isn't fair to new users. Especially for them fibsboard is a way to get help, which is obviously not the case anymore if they have to play several games before being able to register.

Also it would help a great deal if we would have an integrated registration page where one could register on fibs and fibsboard in one go.

I am still in the process of selecting what forum script to use. I narrowed it down to to choices. It all depends on what the wishes for more content are. It is smart to wait for that until you start coding since both scripts have a different API.

Burper, i would really appreciate any positive input that you can give me.
