I'm not allowed to shout

I registered on fibs.com and launched my client. I first thought about asking around how to identify a bot. But I wasn't allowed to "shout" at all users. Also, at the beginning I just want to play against a bot to get used to my client. How can identify a bot?

Hi Sebastian

The "help shout" tells it:
QuoteNAME
Ã,  shout - say something to all users

SYNOPSIS
Ã,  shout <message>

DESCRIPTION
Ã,  With the shout command you can say <message> to all users who are logged
Ã,  in and whose silent toggle is set to NO. If your own silent toggle is set
Ã,  to YES you can't use this command.

LIMITATIONS
Ã,  The '!!' command doesn't work with shouts.
Ã,  The number of shouts is limited for newcomers. This is a Backgammon
Ã,  server. If you want to talk to lots of people rather than play
Ã,  Backgammon please use IRC (ask your system administrator how to
Ã,  use IRC). If your message is directed to one person only, you should
Ã,  use the 'tell' command.

SEE ALSO
Ã,  kibitz, say, tell, toggle-silent, whisper, !!

The list of the bots is:
  • bonehead
  • donzbot
  • all mgnu*
  • MonteCarlo
  • motif
  • ParlorBot
  • NiceRollerBot
  • harmony
  • norbert
as far as I know.

The shout  option is activated after 20 experience points.
A few of the bots can only be played after 400 experience points.(bonehead and maybe one or two mgnu.)

Yeah, sometimes newbies can be obnoxious in shouts, and we don't want that now do we!

These are indeed the nicks of bots, but there is no guarantee that you will be playing a bot if you join bonehead! This is sometimes used by its owner, sometimes to play and allegedly, sometimes to dump points to its owner or selected friends. This tactic accounts in part for some of the grossly inflated reps that we see on fibs.

Since Bonehead has been banned - this really isn't an issue.  :(

Welcome, steinchen!  We are sometimes an obnoxious group, but lovable in our disfunctionality!   :P

By the time you have 100 experience you can shout all you want and play all the bots.

If you are interested in joining any leagues or tournaments, go here:

http://fibsleagammon.free.fr/tournament.htm

Other tournaments are run whenever our tourney directors feel like it.  You will see announcements for these in shout, so keep an eye out for those.   ;)

There's an elementary moral principle which is called the principle of universality. The principle says if something is right for us, it's right for others, if it's wrong for others, it's wrong for us. If you can't accept that principle you should have the decency to shut up. - From the new documentary, Preventive Warriors, www.preventivewarriors.com

bonehead is a bot?  I used to talk for hours with bonehead.  bonehead helped me understand the mysteries of life, as well as the crawford rule.

Say it ain;t so!

Sorry PW but bonehead definitely was a bot  - a very well programmed bot whose kibitzing was particularly well programmed and whose shouts I for one miss - but a bot never the less. I only realised it after about 5 mins k'ing tho'  - I think it was its response to my questions on the turing test (which "it" knew about). I gave it a self referentail question (e.g would you pass the turing test easily?  and it fell back to a default response) but up until then it was doing very well  - its backgammon was fairly normal for a net but its kibitzing was outstanding - does anyone know who its trainer was? If it will limit its shouts I'll happily ask Patti to give them back to it - at least they were more amusing than : "I think "dropper" has lost their connection. Would anyone else care to play?" from Parlorbot and the mgnus et al.

dorbel

I played bonehead on 14th September Diane, so it is still an issue. However, I don't think that I was playing the bot. Bonehead's owner has been banned on numerous occasions but always seems to find a way back.

diane

Yes, I noticed last night bonehead was in - all very odd!!!

I played bonehead last night.  My conversatons with bonehead usually run like this:

PW: Can I hit you in the head with a hammer?

BH: That sounds exciting!

In case Spielberg worries about me, my prior email was subtle sarcasm.  Even with the impaired english skills of some fibsters (and I throw no stones since I only know one language) you really have to identify a bot or a person.
