I found this to be quite fascinating. For example, a common surname like "Smith" is found 9000 times per 1 million people in the US, 12,254 per 1 million in Australia.
I'm in the US and my surname is not very common-- 17 FPM (Frequency Per Million)
All those in the US with my surname came from a single family that immigrated to the US from the UK in the 1800's, where the FPM is 13.
So what's your FPM?
That was interesting!! I have always thought I have a VERY unusual surname...but seems that the biggest take away from this...is that I am English through and through!!
Country FPM
UNITED KINGDOM 26.78
CANADA 4.13
NEW-ZEALAND 2.12
UNITED STATES 1.47
IRELAND 0.69
That is kinda strange, because searches I have done before have suggested it is an Irish name in origin!
OnoMAP classifies me as English, based on my name...and there is a very low FPM presence of my name in Russia, some parts of Europe and Australia. I wonder how the FPM changed by my migration to Australia ;)
